9:00am-10:30am SPRING CLEAN! Dust off the winter cobwebs of technique with Sound, Fingers, Intervals, & Articulation play alongs and duets with Paul Edmund-Davies. PDF workbook folder with music & materials will be sent after registration. This is Paul's 3rd visit to BFA! He will be with us from London.


Paul Edmund-Davies is former Principal Flute of London Symphony. You've heard him play flute on blockbuster film soundtracks such as Star Wars and Harry Potter. Upcoming releases include the James Bond film "No Time to Die".

Top 10 Ways to Fix a "Bad Tone Day" with Judy Grant


BFA flute students have become known for playing with a colorful, resonant sound and wide dynamic range. BFA Faculty Judy Grant will share many of our practice secrets. Have your flutes handy to try out all the techniques (on mute of course!)

Nina Assimakopoulos

1:00-2:15pm. FLUTE MASTER CLASS with Nina Assimakopoulos, Flute Professor at West Virginia University. Professor Assimakopoulos is a dynamic performer & teacher with creative problem solving techniques. She will work with 3 players from the BFA Conservatory Ensemble & Seminar class. Repertoire includes Clarke Great Train Race, Martinu Sonata, Gaubert Fantaisie.

Demarre McGill

2:30-4:00pm ORCHESTRAL EXCERPTS MASTER CLASS with Demarre McGill, Principal Flute of Seattle Symphony and Flute Professor at Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Professor McGill will share his flute expertise through the lens of his distinguished orchestral career. Excerpts will include:

Debussy Faun, Bartok Concerto for Orchestra, Rimsky-Korsakoff Russian Easter Overture, Bach Aus Liebe from St Matthew Passion.

Emmanuel Pahud

7:00-8:30pm Conversation with Emmanuel Pahud, Principal Flute of Berlin Philharmonic. In-depth interview will cover many topics ranging from his early life and diverse career to his thoughts and advice on flute technique, auditions, and what makes a great second flute player in an orchestra. Emmanuel joins us from his home in Berlin.

Maron Anis Khoury

Maron A. Khoury is second flutist with the NY Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, a position he won at age 20. He will join us from Israel to premiere his new recording of Dutilleux Sonatine.

Emi Ferguson

Emi Ferguson is the 1st Prize Winner of the 2013 NFA Young Artist Competition, Principal Flute with Handel and Haydn Society of Boston, and a versatile solo performer who is pushing boundaries on both the modern flute and baroque flute. She will join us from New York City to perform Bach/Ferguson: Allemande, recomposed.

Roel Contreras is a Teaching Artist with Boston Flute Academy and flutist with the Cambridge Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Cynthia Woods. Ro is always an exciting performer to hear play. He will join us from his beautiful new home and music studio in Avondale, Pennsylvania.

Judy Grant

Judy Grant is the Founder and Artistic Director of Boston Flute Academy since 2008 and the Flute Professor of Boston College Music Department. She will host the Open House Recital and perform a piece in memory of Fenwick Smith.

Lia Suk, BFA Concerto Winner

BFA Student Spotlight: Lia Suk is a 10th grade student at Boston Flute Academy and 1st Prize Winner of the 2020 BFA Concerto Competition. She plays with the Boston Youth Symphony, is a member of the BFA Conservatory Ensemble, and was recently chosen for the 2021 Massachusetts All-State Festival.


Lia will perform in the Demarre McGill Orchestral Excerpts Masterclass and also on the BFA Open House Recital. Congratulations to Lia!

Umi

Umi is 8 years old and the youngest student in Judy Grant's studio. Umi has won 1st place in her age group for the 2021 Young Musicians Contest of the New York Flute Club. Umi will play her 1st prize performance for us on the BFA Open House Recital! Congratulations to Umi! Let's help her celebrate!

Many thanks to Flutistry for helping us out in our search for a contrabass flute for the Boston Flute Academy Ensembles Program! BFA's Maliotis Chamber Players, Bernoulli Winds, and the BFA Conservatory Ensemble look forward to playing and hearing a contra in rehearsals, recordings, and concerts!
