Mary (in blue) & Friends...
The question is “why are you passionate about wellness?"...

The answer is I was not, which is how I landed at the door of Blue Bamboo Yoga, Beyond Yoga’s former branch in Stittsville. I did not go to sign up for Yoga. I had taken a year hiatus from my gym membership do develop my intimate relationship with camembert cheese, potato chips and nice comfy chairs. I had grown two sizes and developed chart-topping blood pressure. Did I say I hated going to the gym? I went to the gym with the same joy that I go to the dentist to get my teeth cleaned. But, if you have to do something to maintain your health, it’s nice to sit down on machines and go through the motions while you read a magazine or watch TV to zone out. I noticed a sign in the Blue Bamboo’s window that said Yoga and Pilates. Yoga was out. I needed something “more challenging” and I wanted something with machines [e.g. Pilates]. The fabulous Marie Sabourin, receptionist, gave me the disappointing news that Pilates would not start for a month and it did not involve machines. She very gently recommended I try Yoga for one month and her eyes sparkled when she talked about how much it could help me. So I signed for the month trial while I waited for the “hard stuff”. As my 25 year old niece is so fond of saying “I got schooled”. I spent that month huffing and puffing when I wasn’t lying prostrate on the mat. That was three years ago. I toned up, went down the two sizes and can bend over without fainting. I even do Pilates - on a mat. Big lesson: to quote instructor Su Li Ng “gentle yoga isn’t easy yoga”. You have to pay attention to get results and maintain your health. I’ve learned to pay attention. I don’t miss the magazines or the TV.

What do you enjoy the most about your experience at Beyond ?

First and most importantly, I don’t hate going! The staff and teachers are professional and kind. They clearly love what they are doing and want you to share in their enthusiasm. My fellow members are an inspiration – willing to share stories of their journey through life. In addition, I have received valuable advice on topics ranging from child psychology to recipes, gardening and household maintenance. I am privileged and happy to be counted as part of this community.

GOING BEYOND THE CLOTHING with Jody - Fall Lookbook
Fall Lookbook - A Sneak Peek!

What’s not to love about fall? The autumn transition from summer to winter can both inspire new beginnings and bring back familiar routines. Fall is not too hot, yet not too cold. It has crisp morning air, warm afternoons, leaves that are turning beautiful colours, pumpkin spice lattes, comfort food, and best of all, fall clothing! Our summer clothing still plays a role during the warm days, but we need an extra layer for the cool mornings and evenings. This is a special time of year when you can select from two wardrobes instead of one, and wear two seasons fashionably!

Beyond Yoga’s store has some exciting new athleisure clothing items arriving this fall season...
