Preparing for the Back-to-School Anxieties

As the summer comes to an end and children are preparing to return to school, or maybe even start school for the first time, it's important to consider all the emotions that a new school year may bring. Roadmap Project clinical psychologist Lori Crosby, PsyD reminds us that this time of year can be stressful with worries about new teachers, new environments, managing a chronic condition at school, having to complete medical forms, and so-on. During clinical encounters, this may be a good time to check in with your patients and their families about their emotional health to ensure their needs are being addressed as they start the new school year.

Roadmap at the National Academy of Medicine Symposium

The National Academy of Medicine will host a virtual panel discussion, "Supporting the Emotional Health of Children, Adolescents and Young Adults with Chronic Conditions" on Tuesday, September 12 from 6-7:30 p.m. ET. The Roadmap Project will be featured with an overview from Dr. Carole Lannon; Roadmap Patient and Parent Advisory Group member Diane Pickles will also participate and provide a reflection on the session.

The Member Forum panel extends an invitation to you to attend this virtual forum via Zoom.

On August 5, during her presentation at the annual Pediatric Hospital of Medicine conference in Philadelphia, PA, Dr. Kenya McNeal-Trice from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill highlighted The Roadmap publication, "The impact of being Black while living with a chronic condition: Inpatient perspectives." This article is a useful and impactful resource that we encourage you to read; for those of you in educational settings, please consider using in journal club and trainee sessions.
