UPDATES ON THE ROADMAP PROJECT AND EMOTIONAL HEALTH NEWS

Friend of Roadmap, Tom Glenn, MD, Shares a Patient and Provider Perspective on Emotional Health Resiliency in Chronic Care

Tom Glenn, MD, was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome and is now a Single Ventricle and Advanced Cardiology Fellow at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. Dr. Glenn was nominated by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) to present the Stockman Lecture at the 2020 American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference and Exhibition. More recently, Dr. Glenn shared his wisdom with participants of Roadmap College, which completed in October.

"To me, resiliency is the ability to bend, but not break; to go through the ups and downs that living with a chronic illness often entails," Dr. Glenn said. With resiliency, he identifies a second ingredient to foster emotional health in chronic care patientssupport. "In truth, being strong and resilient means, you ask for and get assistance when you need it to help you recover. Emotional health services need to be rooted into the care plan for any patient with a chronic illness."

No matter how resilient one may have to be, Dr. Glenn reminds providers and families that no one can go through life with chronic illness alone. The Roadmap Project shares a number of resources for providers, patients and families, program directors, and trainees on its website. Click here to explore more.

On the Road to Roadmap

for Emotional Health

Roadmap was well-represented at the National Pediatric Cardiology Quality Improvement Collaborative (NPC-QIC)/ Fontan Outcomes Network (FON) Learning Session in Chicago on November 11 and 12. Meg Didier (an adult with Single Ventricle Congenital Heart Disease), Pediatric Psychologist Dr. Erica Sood, and Dr. Carole Lannon hosted two breakout sessions on Emotional Health and Resilience, sharing Roadmap strategies. The Roadmap Project was also highlighted during a poster session.
