Chump's Chatter

When is it safe to start seeding fescue and other cool season grasses?

Fall is the best time to over seed fescue and other cool grass lawns because it allows a longer growing time in ideal conditions. Cool season grasses germinate when the soil temperature is between 5 0° and 65° degrees - this usually occurs when the daytime air temperatures are between 60° and 75° degrees. W hen planted properly, expect your new seed to germinate within 10 to 14 days. Clink the link below to get an annual care calendar for your fescue lawn, courtesy of the OSU Extension! Featured Annual
There's nothing wimpy about this flower! The pansy is well suited for fall planting and holds up to cooler weather. Available in many colors, it will continue to bloom until spring.
Nothing says fall more than beautiful potted mums from Marcum's Nursery. They are sure to turn any head and welcome guests when potted on your front porch.

September Maintenance Guidelines
  • Get ready for mums, pansies, and kale fall plantings.
  • Select your deciduous B & B (Ball and Burlap) trees for fall/winter planting.
  • Last nitrogen fertilizer application of the year on warm-season grasses should be applied no later than September 15.
  • Pre-emerge using Orzalyn (Surflan), ferti-lome For All Seasons II, or Hi-Yield Turf and Ornamental Weed & Grass Stopper. Apply by the second week of September. NOTE: Do NOT treat areas that will be seeded in the fall for fescue lawns.
  • Seed bluegrass, fescue, or ryegrass as needed in shady areas in late-September through mid-October.

  • See Marcum's watering guidelines for new and established trees and shrubs.
  • Mosquitoes are still thriving - we carry a wide range of treatment options for your yard like ferti-lome MosquitoGo, as well as personal mosquito repellents made by Skeeter Screen, and all natural repellents - citronella plants!
