MAKING PROGRESS

Over the last decade nurse practitioners (NPs) in Alabama have experienced significant improvements in scope of practice and specialization opportunities.

While we recognize there is still much work to be done, let's take a moment to reflect on just how far we have come over the past decade.

For example, in 2014 significant rule changes allowing for reduced barriers to expand practice in rural areas resulted in approximately 1,500 additional licensed NPs in Alabama. Today, there are more than 3,500 NPs in collaborative practice in Alabama  (Alabama Board of Nursing, 2016)
