January 2020 President's Message

Happy New Year! I hope your holidays and time spent with family and friends were enjoyable, and that you have entered the new decade with plenty of fuel in your tank.

As those of you that were able to join us for the 2019 Holiday Party already know, election results were tallied and presented for 2020 Redwood officers. The 2020 Executive Council remains the same as it was at the close of 2019:
President: Chip Witt
Vice President: Ben Davoren
Secretary: Alan Geddes
Treasurer: Jerry Gladstone

Along with Craig Steele, the immediate Past President, these are the elected officers who will serve in the elected roles for 2020. Congratulations to all, and thanks to everyone that cast their vote. All other Board of Director positions are filled by appointment and will be officially announced after the January, 28 2020 Board Meeting,

The Holiday Party enjoyed a second year of having a miniature car auction as part of the celebration. This year’s proceeds, $1,000, were donated to Paws for Purple Hearts. On Dec 18th, Brian Cooley and Craig Steele visited the Paws for Purple Heart facility located in the former Penngrove Hatchery, north of Petaluma, to present Matthew Decker, Clinical Director of the program, with the check.

The “One One Fun Run” on January 1st gave many of us a great opportunity to start our decade off right...behind the wheel of a Porsche and in the company of friends. We’ll round out the month with a Tech Session sponsored and delivered by our friends at Autobahn Automotive in Santa Rosa on January 25; flyer and MSR link to register are already on the club website. Other upcoming events in the first quarter include the annual “Run for the Crab” at Marin Yacht Club on February 22nd and the “Hoppy Porsche Brewery Tour” at Brewster’s Beer Garden in Petaluma on March 7th.

As you put Redwood events on your calendar, please also keep in-mind we have Board Meetings at the Mary’s Pizza Shack on San Marin Drive in Novato every last Tuesday of the month from 7 to 9 p.m. For the first quarter, those dates are January 28th, February 25th, and March 31st. All are welcome; food is on the club but you cover your own beverages.

Here’s to a tremendous 2020!

Thank you.

From the Zone
Collin Fat
Zone 7 Representative

Wishing everyone a wonderful and prosperous New Year! I would hope you have plans to participate in the many club activities that your region and the Zone have planned. By now, each club will have elected a new board of directors and have either completed or are in the process of laying out their annual event calendars. I have sincerely enjoyed my first year serving as your Zone 7 Representative and look forward to attending a variety of regional events in 2020 and getting to meet the members of Zone 7.

I have met many new members over the past year, and many have asked me for suggestions on how to get involved. I almost always recommend trying as many different types of events as you can, knowing that all of them revolve around owning and driving a Porsche. Tours are among the most popular events hosted by local regions and they come in the form of single and multiple day varieties. Participating in a driving tour requires no special preparation other than making sure your Porsche is in good working order. Several very popular multi-day tours coming up are 1) Shasta Regions Zone 7 tour, 2) Sierra Nevada Region’s annual Mammoth Tour, and for as many years as I can remember 3) Sacramento Valley’s Mendocino and Pacific Grove tours.

CRAB 38, Sacramento Valley Region hosts its 38 th  CRAB event May 29-31 st  and is a 3-day multi-event extravaganza featuring all things Porsche. Many past participants have described CRAB as a mini Parade with tours, TSD rally, autocross, concours, and a crab feed and beer 'n' brat all included. The word CRAB stands for crab feed, rally, autocross and Begegnan (a German word referring to a gathering).

The Zone organizes several competitive series including a concours and autocross in which competitors vie for year end awards and bragging rights. These schedules should already be posted on the Zone 7 website. In addition, PCA National also schedules PCA Club Racing throughout the nation with a dedicated series called the West Coast Series held at tracks like Thunderhill Raceway, Sonoma Raceway, Laguna Seca and Buttonwillow. These events are for highly skilled drivers who have specially prepared cars and are duly licensed by PCA to race in these events. Also on the national calendar this year is the club’s largest event, Porsche Parade, which will be held in Southern California this year at the La Quinta Resort near Palm Springs. In addition, two Treffens which are normally just 4 days in length and focus on touring and having a great time meeting with other Porsche enthusiasts, are planned. One is at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs in April followed by another Treffen at the Greenbrier in West Virginia in September. PCA national likes to hosts these events in areas where our membership can’t easily attend a Parade but could attend a Treffen closer by. In addition to these national events, other events which PCA will host for 2020 include Werks Reunion Monterey and Amelia Island. I encourage all members to participate in as many of these national events as possible.

National Awards and Club Recognition:
It may still not be too late to nominate members in your region or your region itself for several national awards that are given out each year at Parade. These include 1) Region of the Year, 2) Family of the Year, and 3) Enthusiast of the Year. Applications opened in December but can still be submitted. If you think your region is deserving or have a family or enthusiast in your club that has stood out, take the next step and nominate them. Zone 7 regions have been recognized almost every year and your club cannot be considered if you do not make a submission or nomination. Take a few minutes to contemplate on members in your region who truly made a difference in your club and nominate them. The link to the National Awards Submission Guidelines:  https://www.pca.org/resource/national-awards-nomination-guidelines .

Zone 7 AX Instructor and Concours Judges School:
Zone 7 will host its autocross instructor’s school on March 7 th  at the Livermore Community Center and the concours team will be hosting their annual Concours Judges and Prep school at Porsche of Livermore as well on March 7 th . I am not sure that you can attend both events as the course material is quite extensive. Watch for more details on the Zone 7 website.

Concours at the Castle

By popular request, Redwood Region’s Zone 7 Concours will return to an amazing venue – the Castle at Ledson Winery in Santa Rosa. We are planning on making this our best concours ever with sponsorship from Ledson Winery.

The gates will open for entrants and helpers at 7:00 am on Sunday, September 20, 2020 allowing enough time for last minute detailing before the 9:00 am start of judging. Awards will be spectacular, etched glass bottles of fine Ledson wine which will include Redwood Region’s 50 th  Anniversary, Zone 7’s and Ledson Winery’s logos – truly a collector’s item. Lunch will be available preordered and prepaid from Ledson’s deli.

So why such advance notice? Surely it is way too early to start preparing your cars, but it is not too early to form a committee of judges and other helpers. You can also prepare yourselves, the Zone 7 website, zone7.pca.org, has great information on what is a concours, how to prepare for a concours and how to be a concours judge.  You will find information on concours judging school on the site too. (You can be both an entrant and a judge, the knowledge gives you an edge.)

Please let us know if you want to help in any way. It is a lot of fun, a great social event and some truly amazing cars to be seen. We cannot do this without you; please join the committee!
