During COVID19
It’s understandable if we all have moments when we’re heartbroken, frustrated and scared.
In phone calls, emails, and social media, we’ve been hearing stories about people in tough situations, desperate for help. This is probably going to go on for a while. That’s why I want to share some resources that you may find useful.
What if I am struggling with my mental health?
If you need someone to talk to, here are some options:
- Senior Loneliness Line: 503-200-1633
- Youth Line: 877-968-8491 or Text teen2teen to 839863
- Mental health crisis line: 503-988-4888.
- The Oregon Recovery Network and MyRecoveryLink offer digital recovery support.
If you're fortunate enough to have a healthcare provider, consider reaching out to them, too.
Please check in with your friends, family, loved ones and neighbors, even if you haven’t talked to them in a while. A simple “How are you doing?” can make a big difference. I have found doing this keeps my energy and mood up.
Please don’t let any self-stigma stand in the way of attending to your mental health. We need more awareness and openness around mental health issues and support options. These are tough times. If you need help, please don’t hesitate to reach out to others.
What if I need health insurance?
You may be able to get it now when you could not before because the Oregon Health Plan was recently
approved
for expanded coverage.
Masks or no Masks: How do I keep up-to-date on the COVID 19 Research?
Our scientific knowledge of how to prevent and treat COVID-19 has to improve. When it does, make sure you know about it.
You need to decide whether to take this option for yourself. But the larger point is, this pandemic and our understating of it will continue to evolve as more data becomes available. Stay alert using news sources you trust.
Sign up for email updates from these COVIS-19 information sources:
We will get through this together by staying together, even if virtually, by taking care of ourselves and helping others.

Hollywood Theater Needs Help With Renovations
|
|
History has not been kind to movie palaces. Most other theaters built during the Golden Age of American cinemas have been demolished, or allowed to decay beyond repair. But the Hollywood Theater still stands thanks to this community's support.
Our lower facade is showing signs of water intrusion and masonry failure - which could lead to severe damage within the wall system. Water has penetrated behind the wall surface, causing paint to blister and buckle. Marble wainscoting is displaying open joints and cracks. Metal reinforcements are corroding. We're seeing troubling indicators of severe damage lurking within, which must be investigated and repaired immediately.
Sadly, many distinctive, historic features of the lower facade were stripped away during the mid-1960’s. While we’re making structural repairs, we can seize the opportunity to finally bring back an aesthetic more in keeping with the original 1926 design.
With your help, we can repair failing masonry, correct and prevent water damage, and revitalize the appearance of our lower facade. So many other movie palaces have been lost, but not the Hollywood. Not yet. Let’s work together to make it last for future generations.
On March 3rd, HNA board members Jo Schaefer, Steve Colburn and Peter Sysyn, presented Doug Whyte, Executive Director of the Hollywood Theater and Christen Fulk, Development Director, with a $700.00 donation to support the restoration of the
theater's lower facade.

QUARANTINE AND NEIGHBORHOOD NETWORKING
Hey, neighbors! How shall we keep in touch with each other during this time of social distancing?
Over on 78th Ave, we have started a group on NextDoor, the community social media application (
Here’s a link to NextDoor)
. The group is called “78th Avenue North.” The vision is that neighbors on the numbered streets, both north and south of Sandy could form NextDoor groups to keep in touch during this time of isolation—groups like “69th Ave South” or “65th Ave North.”
Just a thought.

Sumner Says Thank You. To the many companies and neighbors that helped clean up the Sumner Neighborhood.
|
|
The residents of the Sumner Neighborhood have been fighting for a long time to get their neighborhood cleaned up. Over the past 5 years they have come together as neighbors and successfully cleaned up four drug houses. The neighbors in each of these instances were diligent in working with the neighborhood association, Portland Police and the City of Portland Crime Prevention to evict and move the squatters out, a process that takes 2-3 years. Happily each of these four houses were sold, flipped and now are now home to very nice families.
Their story is not over: one of their long time houses on NE 92
nd Ave (build in the early 1920’s) has been engaged in drug activity, prostitution and multiple other offenses for several years. Again with the help of neighbors coming together, Portland Police, Rapid Response and Jonathan Lewis, Program Coordinator with the City of Portland, this property was finally cleaned up and the squatters were moved out. A total of 45,000 pounds of trash was removed. Good news is the house is up for sale.
The Sumner Association of Neighbors is committed to staying on top of problem houses by working with and supporting neighbors who live near these houses. They also know the importance of working with Portland Police, their NERT Officer, Bob Boylan, and all the other agencies that are involved in the process.

GPNA Board Adds New Members-at-Large
At a recent GPNA meeting, the Board of Directors voted to add two new Members-at-Large. They are:
• Marisa Morby: Marisa initially contacted GPNA about traffic concerns on her street, and thereafter decided to seek a position on the board. Marisa and her partner, Jason, moved back to Portland two years ago and happily settled in northeast Portland to be close to friends and family. Before moving back she lived in Austin, TX and spent two years in Europe, Southeast Asia, and Japan. “Getting involved locally was really important to me after moving around a lot, so I’m very excited to be involved and help out in our neighborhood.”
• Marion James Horna: After working for many years as a mechanical engineer, with an emphasis on wind power generation, Marion recently retired and moved with his wife to Grant Park to be close to his two youngest grandchildren and their parents. A Commissioned Naval Officer and Vietnam veteran, Marion served as board member and chair of the Community Foundation of Ogden Valley. In addition to his GPNA position, Marion currently sits on the Building and Grounds Committee for the North East Community Center.
GPNA welcomes our two new Members at Large!
