Portland City Council Sets Election Schedule to Fill Vacancy
|
|
On Wednesday, January 8, the Portland City Council passed a resolution authorizing a special elections schedule to fill a vacancy in office that occurred upon the death of former Commissioner Nick Fish. The election for the remainder of the Commissioner’s term will coincide with the City’s regular May 19, 2020 Primary Election. A run-off election, if necessary, is set for Tuesday, August 11, 2020, should no candidate receive a majority of the vote.
The City Charter requires filling City Council vacancies by election within 90 days, unless the Council finds reasonable cause for delay. Per the resolution, the elections schedule set by Council allows the City to fill the seat when an election is already being held, saves the City from expending funds on a separate election, and allows as much time as possible for a candidate filing period.
Information about how to apply to appear on the ballot for the office of Commissioner, Position No. 2 will be available for download on the
City Elections Office website
or in person pick-up beginning on Monday, January 13, 2020. The deadline to file for office is March 10, 2020.

Updates on the City Cleanup of Homeless Camps
|
|
The city of Portland’s program that sends teams to clean up homeless camps has been stopped for now, the mayor’s office confirmed to KATU on Monday.
Mayor Ted Wheeler’s spokesman Timothy Becker told KATU the last day of work for crews was Dec. 30.
The issue, however,
is back on the City Council’s agenda
for Wednesday and Hardesty said in a Facebook post Monday that the Council plans to vote on a one-year contract to restart the program.

In keeping with our commitment to student safety, last October PPS joined school districts across the state in using the SafeOregon Tip Line. We want to remind you about this important resource.
SafeOregon was funded by the Oregon Legislature as part of a statewide effort to improve school safety.
It provides a secure means for anyone to anonymously report suspicious or imminently unsafe situations, such as threats of violence, fights, drugs and alcohol, weapons, bullying, harassment, intimidation or self-harm.
Anyone, from students to parents to community members, can access the system in a variety of ways, including:
* The “Report unsafe behavior” button found on every PPS school’s website
* A live call/text (844-472-3367)
* The mobile app that can be downloaded from your Smart Phone via iTunes or Google Play
Trained staff are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to respond.
Please be sure to share this information with your friends and family. Remind your students:
If you see or hear something, say something – immediately.

On November 14, City Council hosted a special council meeting at Self Enhancement, Inc. focused on Civic Life’s year-long process to update City Code Chapter 3.96. Community interest and engagement was extraordinary but Council was only able to hear from roughly half of those who signed up to deliver public testimony due to time constraints.
On January 9, at 2:00pm, City Council will hear from the 35 people who signed up to testify but did not have an opportunity to do so at the November 14th meeting. At this hearing there will be no vote, no new information will be presented, and only those already on the sign-up sheet will be allowed to testify. The record remains open and Portlanders are welcome to continue submitting written testimony.

2020 New Years DIY Memory Jar
|
|
So many of us make new years resolutions and if we don;t do them we get down on ourselves.
How about you try something new this year. 2020 will be a year of positivity.
The idea is to fill a jar with a note about any of those little things that make life special, funny, sad, inspiring, etc.
1.
Get a jar with a top – like a big mason jar or one of those big plastic jugs Decorate it.
2.
Keep a pad of fun colored notepaper or sticky notes and a pen nearby.
3.
Everyone can chip in – even house guests – and place a memory in the jar.
4.
Then on New Year’s Eve or Day 2021, pull out the jar and read all the memories that made 2020 great!
*
Looking for ideas to put into the jar:
*
Funny thing someone said
*
New recipe you tried
*
Something nice someone did for you
*
Something that made you sad
*
Great Meal, movie, event, show, etc.
*
Something you are grateful for
*
Inspirational quote from a friend
*
Special trip
*
Any little thing that made your day
*
Predictions
No Peeking Until The New Year.
