January was named for the Roman god Janus, known as the protector of gates and doorways, who symbolize beginnings and endings. Janus has two faces, one looking to the past, the other with the ability to see the future.
January 17: Martin Luther King Jr. Day (observed). This national holiday is the 3rd Monday in January and honors the principles of this Civil Rights Lleader and Nobel Prize Winner dedicated to nonviolence.
Other famous January birthdays include Muhammad Ali, Jeff Bezos, Elvis Presley and Michelle Obama, Ellen Degeneres and Oprah Winfrey. There are some serious high-earners in this list!
A few fun days you might want to celabrate; 1/20 Penguin Day, 1/22 Answer Your Cat’s Questions Day and 1/29 Puzzle Day. January is National Clean Up Your Computer Month and National Hot Tea Month!
January's birthstone is the garnet, a rare gem that comes in a variety of different colors. Red is the most popular. Januars flower is the carnation, an unassuming, yet charming flower.
Each year, the United Nations chooses a few different topics, or themes that they want all the Countries around the World to focus on. In 2022, these are: International Year of Artisanal Fisheries (various small-scale, low-technology, low-capital, fishing practices undertaken by individual fishing households) and Aquaculture (the rearing of aquatic animals or the cultivation of aquatic plants for food)

City of Portland One Point of Contact
To report issues of illegal camping or related garbage within Portland the City of Portland’s One Point of Contact Campsite Reporting System is the mechanism community members can use. The following youtube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXSc6cr4WuY) describes how to use the system to make a report. It shows how the City and Central City Concern’s Clean Start Program respond to those reports.
It can be very frustrating for community members to raise issues with the City. It is not always clear how to make reports and to whom. The City’s One Point of Contact Campsite Reporting System is designed to simplify the process by providing a platform to more easily report issues about campsites. https://www.portlandoregon.gov/toolkit/70039
Two ways to report a campsite using the One Point of Contact Campsite Reporting System. Please use just ONE of the following methods:
-
PDX Reporter. Select the "Campsite Reporting" icon on the main menu.
- Call 311.
**Please note that not all reports result in immediate action by the City. Every site reported is reviewed and analyzed.** Whether using PDX Reporter or calling 311, the exact location of the site is needed.
Once a report is filed a Clean Start crew is dispatched to conduct an onsite assessment and to pick up camper identified garbage. The Homelessness and Urban Camping Impact Reduction Program (HUCIRP) recommends submitting a new report of the same site once a week to ensure a current assessment by Clean Start (the first responder to the site to remove garbage and biohazardous materials). To report people living in a vehicle go to https://www.portland.gov/transportation/parking/abandoned-auto
If you are reporting criminal activity/behavior, report directly to Police. If you are reporting an emergency, call 9-1-1

Hollywood Senior Center Community
Honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. and all those who struggled and fought for civil rights
“We must accept finite disappointment,
but never lose infinite hope.”
―Martin Luther King Jr.
“There comes a time when one must take a position
that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular,
but he must take it because conscience tells him it is right.” ―Martin Luther King Jr., in A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writings and Speeches
Greetings CFPA-HSC Community,
In recognition of the January 17th Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Holiday (his birthday is January 15), we wanted to start with a couple of quotations that we feel encapsulate our times. When you search for quotes of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., you inevitably encounter endless pages of beautiful, poignant, and relevant words that demonstrate King’s empathy and compassion, and his ability to speak to pretty much every aspect of the human condition. The quotes above well represent how we’re feeling these days; staying positive in the face of an uncertain future, as well as striving to be honest about the situation we’re in and what that means for us as individuals, a community, and a species moving forward.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is an important historical figure, not just for the Civil Rights movement, but for the United States as a whole. He was steadfast in his commitment to racial and economic justice, spurred on by the righteousness of his convictions, borne out of love for humanity and his commitment to God.
Let’s all use MLK Day as a reminder that there is a lot of work yet to be done. While Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Civil Rights movement more broadly, was able to make incredible progress through activism, court challenges, and public policy, we still live in a society with incredibly different outcomes depending on who your parents are and where you come from. We are grateful to Dr. King and all those who fought and continue to fight for a more just and equitable society for lighting the path.
Check out the local activities below recognizing MLK Day. [Proof of vaccination and masks are required for live events.]

COVID-19 UPDATE
Reiterating our last eBlast, the Community for Positive Aging andHollywood Senior Center have suspended all non-essential in-person programs both this week and next (Jan. 10–23), and will reassess our status during the week of January 17. We hope that we’ll be able to return to limited in-person programming at the center the week of January 24, and move forward with reopening on certain days sometime in February, but these decisions will be guided by data, CDC/OHA/Multco guidelines, as well as conversations with staff, volunteers, community members, and community partners.
We made this decision for a variety of reasons, but we want to make clear that we welcome all feedback, whether you support the decision or not. This decision was made out of an abundance of caution to prevent the continued spread of the highly contagious Omicron variant, but also to give us time to reformulate our reopening plan to incorporate a new understanding of what our community looks like living with COVID-19 as a reality, similar to how we live with the flu.
COVID-19 is not the flu. But recognizing that, similar to the flu, we will all inevitably get COVID-19 at some point in our lives completely changes both our risk calculus and our behaviors. Our goal as a community is to mitigate both individual and community risk, and protect the most vulnerable in our community so that we’re reducing and limiting the number of people who are hospitalized or die from this virus.
As we work toward re-opening, we ask for your support to allow us to make this re-engagement possible. To support the Community for Positive Aging–Hollywood Senior Center in our ongoing efforts to keep our community connected and informed, visit our donation page or send a check or money order to Community for Positive Aging at Hollywood Senior Center, 1820 NE 40th Ave, Portland, OR 97212.
All the best,
Michael Murphy
Center Activity & Event Manager

Pineapple Angel Food Cake
Ingredients Needed
- Box of Angel Food Cake Mix
- 20 ounce can of Crushed Pineapple in Juice
IMPORTANT
Just the contents of the box, no need to follow the directions on the box, combine the mix with a 20 ounce can of crushed pineapple in its own juice. No need to use a mixer, just stir it by hand. When you do this, something magical happens!)
The mixture starts to froth and it turns into an amazingly airy, fluffy bowl of deliciousness right before your eyes.
Once it’s all mixed up, simply pour it into a 9 x 13 baking dish and bake it at 350 for 30 minutes
