January 2023

Happy New Year to You

from Central Northeast Neighbors

Board and Staff!

January was named for the Roman god Janus, known as the protector of gates and doorways who symbolize beginnings and endings. Janus is depicted with two faces, one looking into the past, the other with the ability to see into the future. What a fitting symbol for this first day of the year; this month is our door into 2023 the new year.

Over 50 tons of trash are left in Times Square after New Year’s Eve celebrations. About 3,000 pounds of that is confetti — that's a lot to clean up! confetti that falls over the crowd at midnight. The confetti dropped in Times Square is holding secret messages. The confetti in Times Square has thousands of people's wishes written on them. In 2015 "wishfetti" became a part of the tradition. People write their wishes for the new year and submit them to the Wish Wall in Times Square (or online) and those wishes are turned into the confetti that falls over the crowd at midnight.

January's flower is the carnation, the birthstone is the garne and the zodiac signs are the 1st to the 19th is Capricorn and the 20th to Feb. 18 is Aquarius.

Some ideas for you to try in Central Northeast Portland in January!

  • Near Rose City Park neighborhood...try Celtic Axe Throwing at the Laurelwood Pub!
  • Looking for a more peaceful opportunity visit The Grotto a serene woodland sanctuary in Madison South neighborhood, features 62 acres of lush botanical gardens. No matter what time of year you visit, the Grotto offers calm, peace and introspection, transcending boundaries.
  • The Hollywood Theatre is a Portland landmark with a national reputation for award-winning film programming, innovative educational programs, and providing fiscal support for local filmmakers. You can see classic and contemporary films and live performances.
  • Try a coffee and baked good olvingly created on premises at Bison Coffeehouse in Cully neighborhood. Loretta Guzman, native Portlander and member of the Shoshone-Bannock tribes of Fort Hall, Idaho, is the owner of Bison Coffeehouse. It is Portland's only Native American-owned coffee shop.
