This week's bag really says "FALL". This week is one of our Open to the Public Weeks - A chance to celebrate the changing of the seasons without a full season commitment. This week's bag celebrates the first apple cider, pears, and pasture raised pork. Oh, and wait until you see these BIG butternuts. One of our growers is growing a variety called Atlas. They are large with plenty of creamy smooth, sweet flesh.
We are also announcing our WINTER SEASON. I know...the dreaded "w" word, but in Fresh Fork world, we plan for the various seasons months in advance. We hope you will join us for another season of local foods, because yes, you can still eat local in the winter when it's bitter cold out with snow on the ground! Cortland Apples, Organic
About a month ago I wrote about a small orchard in Navarre that was experimenting with an Organic apple program featuring dairy whey as part of their program.
Organic apples in Ohio are really the last frontier for the organic grower. Growing stone fruits in our high humidity climate creates the prefect conditions for fungal infections that cause defects like scab.
Isaac at Sunny Slope has been talking with growers everywhere trying to figure out how to grow organic apples. His program starts with good nutrition and dairy whey. He uses a clay product to spray the apples and create a protective coating that the bugs can't bite thru. Fortunately, it has been dry and this strategy has had good results.
These apples aren't picture perfect like the industry wants, but they are clean, healthy, and delicious.
The Cortland is a sweet-tart variety with a bright white flesh, good crunch, and serves equally as good as a slicer for salads and cheese trays, snacking, or baking.

Winter Season Registration | |

Fresh Fork in the winter isn't all kale and turnips; it's a chance for us to show off how we have been planning ahead all year.
Our winter program is a bigger bag, and after Thanksgiving it is every-other-week. The season starts out with cold hardy crops, transitions to more meat and storage crops, and ends with more prepared items. We have fun over the winter with projects like our farm-made quiches, pepperoni rolls, ratatouille, soups and more.
Here are the winter highlights:

Omnivore, Vegetarian, and Carnivore Options available (vegetarian very limited)
- Limited spots for Vegetarian Shares
- Carnivore share is the meat lovers pack. Our version of buying 'freezer meat'. More details HERE.
- One Size Package - more similar to the summer large
- When the schedule moves to every-other-week and the products are less perishable, this is like 1 large share to eat over 2 weeks of time and more manageable.
- Schedule - Starts Nov 3, first 3 weeks in a row, skips Thanksgiving week,, then every other week until May 10. Full list of pick up dates HERE.
- Same vacation policy and guarantee. 4 weeks can be put on hold and cancel at anytime.
