DAVID B. DAHLQUIST
OPENING FRIDAY

OPENING RECEPTION | FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2
DAVID B. DAHLQUIST | INTERIORITY
| | |
We’re pleased to invite you to the opening reception for INTERIORITY: New Work by David B. Dahlquist, October 2 at Moberg Gallery from 5:00–8:00 PM. The artist will be in attendance, and beverages, bites, and live piano music will accompany the reception.
This new body of work offers an intimate look at David’s ongoing exploration of nature, architecture, memory, and the spaces we hold within ourselves. Drawing from his longstanding relationship with ceramics, David considers the idea of containment, the relationship between inside and outside, and the ways natural forms such as forests, caves, shells, and nests can become metaphors for our own inner lives.
After decades of creating significant public art and architectural projects, INTERIORITY provides an opportunity to experience David’s work in a more personal and contemplative setting.
We would especially love for David’s friends and colleagues to join us for the opening and celebrate this new chapter in his artistic journey.

David B. Dahlquist is a nationally recognized artist and teacher. The emphasis of his work has been in the design and creation of major, site-specific sculptural public art installations, integrated within building architecture and the landscape. The year 2020 marked his return to personal studio ceramics. This return reaffirms his original love of clay.

ARTIST STATEMENT
The concept of interiority in relationship to nature bridges philosophy, ecology, art and architecture. It is the thread that connects mind and body. Interiority explores how the natural world possesses an inner subjective life or sentience, how humans experience an internal sense of self within natural environments, and how natural elements create sheltered, womb-like spaces (like forests, caves, shells, or nests) that mimic an ecological interior.
Perhaps the oldest, and most profound understanding of Interiority, is found in the history of ceramics, and specifically in pottery, where the “spirit of containment,” the relationship between inside and outside is made real.

FONTAINE SCARELLI
| | |
Chicago-born and raised, Fontaine Scarelli is an abstract expressionist painter whose work electrifies the art world with a blend of raw emotion and philosophical depth. A former fashion design student, Scarelli made an unconventional leap into painting, bringing with him a sense of defiant creativity and a visual language that’s entirely his own.
Scarelli’s canvases, often large-scale and immersive, pull viewers into a narrative space where time, memory, and perception collide. Drawing on influences from post-apocalyptic films, The Twilight Zone, and a solitary upbringing, his work speaks to existential themes of life, death, and the dissonance between reality and illusion. Each piece channels his fascination with the strange and the sublime, blending rebellion and introspection in a way that defies traditional boundaries.

JEFF FLEMING

Overtly stereotypical images of landscapes, seascapes, still lifes, and figures steep these works within the traditions of Western painting. Fleming excavates these snapshots searching for new meaning and relevance. The layer of crushed dirt beneath the images ground them in the hear and now.
