Oregon University's Dr. Ana Quiñones reflects on her NRMN-P³ grant writing program and receiving a score on her R01 grant application Dr. Ana Quiñones of the Oregon University School of Public Health was encouraged to pursue a process called rapid resubmission by mentors from her NRMN-P³ cohort, leading to
Quiñones' successfully submitting an R01 grant application to the National Institute on Aging (NIA).

Dr. Lee Gibbs on Earning his Ph.D. at UNTHSC and the Importance of Mentoring and Networking
Lee D. Gibbs, Ph.D., graduated in March from the University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) with his Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences, Cancer Biology. He speaks with NRMN about his research in breast cancer, as well as the critical impact that mentoring and networking have had and will continue to have on his career advancement and contributions to the scientific community.

NRMN Convenes Writing Accountability Workshop/Panel at
New England Science Symposium

On Friday, March 24, the National Research Mentoring Network held a half day career development workshop in collaboration with the New England Science Symposium (NESS). NRMN and NESS designed the workshop with a goal of supporting postdoctoral fellows from a diversity of backgrounds in their professional development, in alignment with NRMN's mission to foster persistence and success among scientists from all backgrounds pursuing biomedical research.

NRMN proudly announces the official release of curricula for Culturally Aware Mentorship (CAM) training, including an online training module, the availability of in-person training workshops, and a CAM skills self-assessment survey.
Join the CAM team's Drs. Angela Byars-Winston and Rick McGee online this Thursday, April 27th at 2pm Central / 3pm Eastern for a live webinar entitled, "
Digging Deeper, Doing Better: Research Science and the Messiness of Engaging Cultural Diversity," where they will explore topics central to the CAM curriculum.

Principal Investigator Dr. Kola Okuyemi moves to University of Utah, expands geographic footprint of NRMN cores
|
Kolawole Okuyemi, M.D., MPH, Professor of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Minnesota and Director/Principal Investigator of NRMN's Professional Development Core, assumed a new role in March 2017 as Chair of University of Utah's Department of Family and Preventive Medicine. Dr. Okuyemi has long focused on improving the health of underserved and refugee populations, serving as Director and Endowed Chair for Health Equity Research, and as the Principal Investigator and Director of the NCI-funded Minnesota Center for Cancer Collaborations.
Dr. Okuyemi's leadership of NRMN will continue at the University of Utah, where the headquarters of the Professional Development Core will also relocate starting in July 2017.

RROC is pleased to announce the launch of the Health Disparities Learning Collaboratory (HDLC): An inclusive learning environment, the HDLC is testing the hidden influence of social networks and the role of team science, collaboration and communication, in fostering persistence of scholars in the outcome of grant submissions.

The invisible college, a network of successful scientists working to help each other and mentor the next generation of investigators, has been in operation for centuries serving to promulgate and advance the frontiers of science. Given the low numbers of underrepresented minorities in the biomedical research workforce, is it possible to usher in a new generation of scientists to the Invisible College in order to accurately reflect the population demographics of the United States?

Have you Connected with a Mentee or Mentor on NRMN's Guided Virtual Mentorships Platform?
Log in to your profile this month and make a meaningful connection as you and a partner explore a series of discussions guided by weekly prompts on topics such as motivation for science, awareness of the impact of cultural background on one's career, aligning expectations between mentors and mentees, and more.
Mentors who participate in at least one cycle of mentorship with a mentee will receive an "NRMN Mentor" credential in recognition of completion.

NRMN Principal Investigator and Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) Professor of Medicine, Senior Associate Dean for Clinical and Translational Research and Clinical Research Center Director Elizabeth Ofili, MD, MPH, FACC, will be receiving the 2017 National Minority Quality Forum (NMQF) Lifetime Achievement Award at its
Annual Leadership Awards Dinner
on April 24-25 in Washington, DC.
The NMQF Lifetime Achievement Award honors individuals whose life work has had a significant impact on eliminating health inequities.
