Operation Clean Water: UV Disinfectant

Temporary Lane Closures on 73 Street for UV Disinfectant Pilot Program

What's Happening

As part of Operation Clean Water, the City of Miami Beach has partnered with the University of Miami (UM) to conduct a pilot program to study the effectiveness of ultraviolet (UV) light to disinfect stormwater runoff before it enters Park View Canal.

On Friday, October 17 the eastbound lane on 73 Street will be blocked off to traffic and parking from 6 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Cars parked along the eastbound block will need to relocate to allow for street sweeping vehicles and testing teams to work in the area. This is to allow the UM team to conduct the study without interference from traffic.

The goal of this study is to determine the effectiveness of UV light at neutralizing and eliminating bacteria colonies that could be found in the water. Studies have shown that stormwater runoff contains high levels of bacteria, and 73 Street has been identified as a hotspot for the contamination. The team will be testing 3 different storm drains, one with no street cleaning, one with just street sweeping and one with street sweeping plus UV light. Sprinklers will be used to simulate rainfall on the street and samples will be collected at each storm drain for analysis.

Below is a map indicating the restricted lane and the project area in the red box.

Work Schedule

The work will take one day, starting at 6 a.m. and ending at 3:30 p.m. After this time normal traffic and parking regulations will resume. This pilot program will be completed on October 17.

If you are parked along the Eastbound lane of 73 Street, please consider alternate parking locations for Friday morning.
