A Note from Dr. Paul Gilbert, Operation Walk's President of the Board.
Our annual gala was held at the Annandale Country Club in Pasadena on October 22nd. We are truly humbled by the response from all those involved. From the planning committee, to the participation from our Board, to the volunteers who ran the event, to the participants and donors; the night was a resounding success. Our goal was to raise money to enable us to continue our important work for our patients and we did this.
We also wanted to have an event to thank our donors and volunteers and to have fun! I think we did this as well. I am already looking forward to next year!

Ask a Physical Therapist
by: Kyle Baldwin, DPT
|
|
Physical therapists are trained to help people move and keep them moving. They have specialized education in anatomy, therapeutic
exercise, and the study of human movement.
They are an excellent source of knowledge and practical tips on how to regain or improve range of motion, strength, and function as it pertains to your daily life, sports, or other leisure activities, especially after surgery or injury.
In this section, 'Ask a PT', here's some common questions and answers we hope you find valuable.
Q. When can i get off my walker or cane following my hip or knee replacement surgery?
A. The need for a walking device usually depends on two things: comfort and strength.
It is natural to limp and feel some discomfort in the first few weeks following hip or knee replacement surgery. The purpose of a walker/crutches/can is to help normalize the walking (gait) pattern and make movement more comfortable. As the swelling goes down around your operation site, along with the post operative exercises , you will be more able to tolerate more weight through the operated leg and thus start to wean yourself from these devices. Weaning from a walking device takes about 3-6 weeks as long as the rest of your joints are feeling ok.
Q. How long should I do my exercises following my surgery?
A. Typically you should do your exercises twice per day for at least 6 weeks following your surgery. These exercises are designed to regain your range of motion and strength. These exercises are typically difficult early on in the process but become easier with time and practice. Swelling makes your muscles perform poorly. The post operative exercises allow you to get your coordination and strength back in the muscles so that you can function safely and confidently. Your new joint will perform terrifically, but you need to do the exercises regularly to help with the movement of your leg.
Q. How much walking should I be doing after my surgery?
A. You should begin your walking program right away following your joint replacement operation. This activity is essential to kick start your whole body into normal functioning. Generally speaking, you should try to start with 5-7 minutes of walking on your first day and then add one minute to your walk each day. The goal is to get to 30-40 minutes of continuous walking. Don't guess on your time. Actually measure it with a timer on your phone/watch/etc. This will keep you honest and also make you proud of your progress.
As Dr. Larry Dorr famously said, his organization is called Operation Walk, not
Operation Sit. I encourage you to make walking a lifelong habit.

#GIVINGTUESDAY

Imagine not being able to go to work, hold your child, clean your home, shop for necessities or even tie your own shoes. How would limited movement change your life? The life of your family?
More than 350 million people globally are afflicted by arthritis. Many are unable to receive treatment or much-needed joint replacement surgery. Arthritis is not a fatal disease, but one that wears away at your entire being. It affects your joints, your muscles, and your mental health. Left unchecked it can lead to weight gain and immobility which opens the door for diseases such as diabetes and heart and pulmonary diseases.
Operation Walk is committed to help those who don’t have access to life changing hip and knee replacement surgery. We are working on ways to help more people that are uninsured in the USA, as well as safely travel to patients awaiting us in other countries. But we can’t do it alone.
Our team is working to return to Arusha, Tanzania in 2023. Our last mission was in 2012 and there are hundreds of patients waiting for us to return. The trip is long and the costs of shipping are great, but our team of volunteers are up to the task. All we need is your support.
#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving that helps to support non-profit organizations around the world. This year the event will be held on November 29. We ask that our volunteers, donors, and supporters come together on the 29th to help make our 2023 mission a reality.
