Message from the President
As the new President of the OR Division, I am thrilled to greet you all and extend my warmest wishes for a fruitful fall season. It is both an honor and a privilege to lead such a dedicated and talented group of professionals.
 
In this newsletter, you will discover highlights from the past year, as well as insights into upcoming division activities. am pleased to share that our recent elections, held in May 2023, welcomed three exceptional board members to our team: Tugce Isik (Clemson University), Kelly Sullivan (University of Arkansas), and Weijun Xie (Georgia Institute of Technology). I extend my heartfelt thanks to our outgoing board members, Talayeh Razzaghi and Karmel Shehadeh, for their invaluable contributions over the last two years. Yongjia Song, having completed his term as Director, now steps into the role of President-elect, bringing with him a wealth of experience and expertise.

In addition, I would like to take this opportunity to shed light on some of our current activities.  
  • OR Track Chairs for the 2024 IISE Annual Conference: The organizing committee for the track includes Dr. Jun Zhuang (primary coordinator), Dr. Suchithra Rajendran (secondary coordinator), Dr. Rob Curry, and Dr. Yongjia Song.

  • Inaugural IISE OR Division Student Case Competition: We will be launching the IISE OR Division Student Case Competition in the upcoming months. It will focus on modeling and solving a practical problem faced by a real organization. This competition will complement our existing teaching and undergraduate research awards. Dr. Samira Saedi is leading this effort along with the other dedicated OR Board members.

  • Emerging Topics in OR Podcast Series: We will continue to organize our podcast series on emerging topics in OR. Dr. Kelly Sullivan and Dr. Tugce Isik will be coordinating this effort. We are looking for individuals like you to contribute to our podcasts to facilitate knowledge-sharing and skill development. Feel free to reach out to Dr. Sullivan (ksulliv@uark.edu) to express interest or nominate a contributor.

  • Engaging Student Members and Fostering Growth: We will be organizing new events and activities to engage our student members, including new initiatives for student recruitment and retention. Dr. Tugce Isik and Weijun Xie will be leading this effort.
I am looking forward to serving as your President, and I hope you will consider participating in the planned activities. In addition, please contact me with any questions or ideas on how we can best serve the OR Division.

Operations Research Track at IISE 2024 Annual Conference
Make your plans to join us in Montreal! Abstracts for the IISE Annual Conference & Expo 2024 (May 18-21 in Montreal, Canada) are due on November 17, 2023. Please refer to the call for abstracts at the following link:

IISE OR Division Awards Update
We are excited to begin a new cycle of IISE OR Division awards. A brief summary of the awards has been provided below. We will announce the full details of each award by email and social media at a later date.

IISE OR Teaching Award: This award recognizes excellence in teaching operations research and will be presented at the IISE Annual Conference & Expo 2024. The anticipated application deadline for this award is February, 2024 (date TBD).

Undergraduate Research Dissemination Award: This award recognizes outstanding undergraduate research completed in OR. Applicants must submit a presentation abstract to the 2024 IISE Annual Conference & Expo before the November 17, 2023 deadline. Applicants must also prepare a paper (formatted according to IISE Annual Conference guidelines) to be submitted to the competition in January, 2024 and present at the 2024 IISE Annual Conference & Expo (May 18-21, 2024; Montreal, Canada).

Student Case Competition: This award recognizes a team of students for excellence in modeling and solving a problem faced by a real-world organization. The details of this competition will be announced in the coming months.

We extend thanks to Talayeh Razzaghi for coordinating the awards for the 2022-23 cycle and also the fleet of volunteer judges who made these awards possible, including, Shokoufeh Mirzaei, Ruiwei Jiang, Thomas Sharkey and Katie McConky.

Welcome the New IISE OR Division Board Members
Please join us in welcoming the new IISE OR Division Board Members!
Dr. Tugce Isik
Dr. Tugce Isik is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering at Clemson University. Her research interests are in the area of stochastic modeling and optimization with a focus on capacity and workforce allocation problems that arise in manufacturing and service systems. She is an active member of IISE and previously has served as IISE Scholarship Trustee and a co-chair of the OR track for the 2023 IISE Annual Conference & Expo.
  
For the 2023-24 year, Dr. Isik will be organizing events to engage student members and increase student membership while also supporting the development of the podcast series.
Dr. Kelly Sullivan
Dr. Kelly Sullivan is an Associate Professor in the Industrial Engineering Department at the University of Arkansas. His research focuses on methodology in network optimization and systems reliability and applications pertaining to designing, maintaining, and securing networked systems. He currently serves as associate editor for the INFORMS Journal on Computing in the Network Optimization: Algorithms and Applications area. He also served as co-chair of the OR track for the 2023 IISE Annual Conference & Expo.

For the 2023-24 year, Dr. Sullivan will be managing the IISE OR Division newsletter and social media accounts while also coordinating the development of new podcast episodes and assisting with the case competition.
Dr. Weijun Xie
Dr. Weijun Xie is the Coca-Cola Foundation Early Career Professor and Assistant Professor in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech. Before joining ISyE, he was an Assistant Professor at the Grado Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, Virginia Tech, from August 2017 to July 2022. Dr. Xie obtained his Ph.D. in Operations Research at the Georgia Institute of Technology in August 2017.

His research interests are theory and applications of stochastic, discrete, and convex optimization. His works have received multiple awards, including the 2022 New Investigator Award from the Virginia Space Grant Consortium (NASA), the 2021 NSF CAREER Award, Winner of the 2020 INFORMS Young Researchers Paper Prize. He currently serves as Associate Editor of Mathematical Programming and the Journal of Global Optimization.

For the 2023-24 year, Dr. Xie will be chairing the IISE OR Division awards.
