Message from the President
|
The IISE OR Division Board is excited for the upcoming IISE Annual Conference. In this newsletter, we will highlight some of the reasons for our excitement as well as highlight some of the activities of our past year. We are looking forward to:
- Attending sessions within the OR track at the conference to learn about how widely applicable OR is.
- Recognizing the recipients of the OR Division teaching and undergraduate research awards.
- Highlighting the contributions of IISE OR Division Board members. We want to especially recognize the contributions of Karmel Shehadeh, Talayeh Razzaghi, and Yongjia Song who are completing their two-year appointments as on the Board of Directors.
- The IISE OR Division podcast series, which focused on public sector OR this year and included Dr. Anna Nagurney (UMASS Amherst) and Dr. Andrew Trapp (WPI) during the spring.
- Launching a new IISE OR Division Student Case Competition that will focus on students’ modeling and solving a practical problem faced by a real organization. This competition will be released before the fall semester, so students can work on it the entire academic year.
We invite you all to attend the IISE OR Division Town Hall meeting on Sunday, May 20 at 11 a.m. at the IISE Annual Conference. We will recognize the recipients of the OR Division awards, welcome our newest board members, and have a panel discussion on how to effectively integrate undergraduate students into research projects. This panel features faculty members that have been integrating undergraduates into OR projects during their careers.
Sincerely,
Thomas Sharkey

OR Track at IISE Annual Conference
|
This year we received about a hundred submissions to the OR track at the IISE Annual Conference. Thanks to the OR Track co-chairs, Drs. Jun Zhuang (University at Buffalo), Tugce Isik (Clemson University), Kelly Sullivan (University of Arkansas), Danial Davarnia (Iowa State University), and Hadi Charkhgard (University of South Florida). This team reviewed all the abstracts, and eventually scheduled 63 abstracts into about 16 sessions at the conference program.
The OR sessions at the conference covers a large range of emerging topics as reflected by some of the sessions: OR Innovations in Disaster Management, Infectious Disease Modeling and Control, Emergency Logistics and Infrastructure Planning, OR Innovations in Sustainability and Natural Resources, Machine Learning Applications in Optimization, and Quantum and High-Performance Computing, Additionally, we will also have two OR-sponsored special sessions (Town Hall, and Undergraduate Research Competition).
The committee also reviewed 23 full papers that were submitted to the OR track, accepted 20 of them, and selected the following paper as the winner for the IISE OR Track Best Paper Award:
“Models and Network Insights for Node- and Edge-based Districting” by Zeyad Kassem and Adolfo R. Escobedo - Arizona State University.
See many of you in New Orleans soon! Safe travels and enjoy the conference!
Sincerely,
Jun Zhuang (University at Buffalo)

IISE OR Division Awards Update
|
The IISE Operations Research (OR) division recognizes excellence in teaching OR. The award will be presented at the IISE Annual Conference & Expo 2023. The selection committee has determined the eligibility of nominees. Criteria used in evaluation include solid demonstration of leading excellence in teaching of OR concepts, quality of the course content and the material that has been created by the nominee, use of innovative approaches to teach the OR course, and demonstration of the value of teaching OR concepts to the department, students, and community.
The winners of this year are Dr. Kayse Maass (an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Northeastern University) and Dr. Pascal Van Hentenryck (A. Russell Chandler III Chair and Professor in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech).
Dr. Maass incorporated principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) into her course by inviting the audience, the students taking the course, to co-design the course policies, topics, and projects. The instructor’s particular attention to DEI in course content design and delivery was a crucial stimulating factor in students’ ownership of learning and class participation, resulting in an experiential and effective learning experience.
Dr. Van Hentenryck took the COVID-19 pandemic as an opportunity to transform a highly technical course into one that well supports self-paced learning, which not only incorporates recorded lectures but also storytelling, relationship building, support groups, and networking. The innovative approach of delivering education in this course can inspire many OR courses and their instructors.
We sincerely thank Dr. Ruiwei Jiang, Dr. Shokoufeh Mirzaei, and Dr. Talayeh Razzaghi for serving as the committee to select these award winners.
Sincerely,
Talayeh Razzaghi (The University of Oklahoma)

IISE Operations Research Division Podcast Series
|
This year, our IISE OR podcast series focused on the topic of “Operations Research for Social Good.” This new series aims to bring our communities attention to applications of OR on topics related to social good, and learn from experienced researchers in this domain on their journey in this area. Dr. Yongjia Song and Dr. Karmel Shehadeh hosted four researchers who leveraged various OR techniques to address emerging and critical societal problems:
- Dr. Laura Albert from the University of Wisconsin-Madison;
- Dr. Phebe Vayanos from the University of Southern California;
- Dr. Anna Nagurney from the University of Massachusetts;
- Dr. Andrew Trapp from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
