Opioid addiction is a major health concern affecting Americans of all ages. Missourians, especially, are impacted by the dangerous effects of opioids. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, opioid overdoses in the nation's Midwestern region increased by more than 60 percent in 14 months.

The health effects of opioid abuse are widespread, including death. Opioids also prevent individuals from pursuing work and family. I continuously hear from businesses in the Fourth Congressional District that few job applicants can pass a drug test. Additionally, it breaks my heart to hear about situations where opioids prevented parents from playing an active role in their children's lives. It is time for us to help more Americans to realize their full potential by reducing their dependence on addictive drugs.

In an effort to bring an end to opioid abuse, I visited high schools in the Fourth District as part of my second annual Drug Free Missouri Week. A mother, whose 20 year old daughter died from heroin overdose, visited the schools with me. Together we helped the high school students to understand that their lives are valuable and they should rely on their faith, family, and friends, rather than drugs. In Congress, my House colleagues and I have passed more than 50 bills to address this crisis including bills making it easier for doctors and patients to access pain-relief alternatives to opioids.

I am proud of the work Congress has accomplished, but far too many Americans are still victims of opioid abuse. This issue can only be resolved with support from the community. I hope that you will consider partnering with me in this fight by sending an immediate contribution of $100, $50, or $25 at www.vickyhartzler.com . Together we can help our friends and family to avoid opioids and protect their lives.

Onward,
