WI Salt Awareness Week 2021: Wraps up today, January 15
Road salt helps keep our communities safe during inclement winter weather, but all the salt that we apply to streets and sidewalks ends up in our fresh water. During rain events and spring snowmelt, stormwater carries salt to our local freshwater streams and lakes. Salt, or sodium chloride, permanently contaminates freshwater.
|
|
in the past five years, a growing number of Wisconsin municipalities and local private companies have reduced salt use by 30-40% through education, equipment upgrades, and implementation of best practices. Watch YouTube livestreams for a diverse speakers discuss #thetruecostofsalt to our drinking water, pets, freshwater ecosystems, and infrastructure, what’s being done, and how to be Salt Wise. www.wisaltwise.com

Winter Activation Ideas for Main Streets & Neighborhoods During COVID19
As COVID19 restrictions and public safety concerns limit indoor activities, restaurants, entertainment, public events, social gatherings and more have turned to the outdoors. This has been a great lifeline during the Spring and Summer but will become challenging during the colder, darker winter months.
Winter Places sent out a call seeking design ideas for quickly implementable, low cost interventions to drive visitors back to Main Street that will encourage them to stay longer and patronize area restaurants and businesses. This design guide is the final product of creative submissions from students, architects, artists, designers and more from across the United States, Canada, Europe and beyond! We hope these can help you bring customers back to your small businesses community and provide a safe social space for you and your neighbors. Download the Guide (sign-up required)

Pandemic Resilience: Safer citizens, better outcomes through innovation in land use and policy
Tuesday, January 26 from 12 - 1 pm CST
Summary What’s likely to linger in the aftermath of the global COVID crisis are the impacts on local and regional governments that provide the services citizens experience most directly in their daily lives. Faced with budget shortfalls, growing to-do lists for routine tasks delayed by the emergency, and general uncertainty about a “new normal,” how might governments address the uncertainty and respond effectively to the challenges? That’s the goal of our Pandemic Toolkit. Currently being translated into 7 languages, with English, Spanish, and Arabic available now at http://www.placemakers.com/pandemic-toolkit/. Join this session with the toolkit’s lead author, Hazel Borys, to explore the applications.
About the Speaker Hazel Borys is President of PlaceMakers, LLC in the USA and PlaceMakers, Inc., in Canada, city planning firms working to advance the livability conversation. Borys and her team are passionate about walkable urban and rural places, and believe that diverse, character-rich neighborhoods can actually make us happier. She guides governments through policy and land use law reforms and helps developers build livable places. Hazel is an engineer with an MBA, specializing in finance and marketing. She is lead author of the Pandemic Toolkit, CodesStudy.org, and CodeScore.org. Hazel is a PlaceShakers.com blogger and serves on the boards of the Transect Codes Council and the Winnipeg Foundation, Canada’s oldest community foundation.

Reminder - The 2020 Engaging Local Government Leader (ELGL) Diversity Dashboard survey is live and ready for you to complete so your community’s data is logged into an interactive dashboard measuring the demographics of local government leaders. The survey is short and only takes a few minutes to complete. You can provide responses for yourself or for your organization.
Please take the survey online here: https://publicinput.com/diversity2020. ELGL collects this information because “what gets measured gets improved.” If we can first understand the diversity of local government leaders, we can be more effective at finding ways to increase and encourage diversity and inclusion in the local government field.
Each week, ELGL uploads the completed survey responses to the live DiversityDashboard.org site, so data can be analyzed. Your personal information will not be included, and data will not be used for any purpose other than this project analysis.
Please take the survey today so your local government is included in this year’s Diversity Dashboard! If you want more information about ELGL, a professional association focused on all levels of government, you can check out their website here: www.elgl.org.
