Dear S2 Community,

It’s hard to believe that the school year is winding down given the buzz of activity. In this newsletter we share some new opportunities and supports we are providing for students and families. The highlight is our first graduation, which promises to be both exciting and emotional; please be sure to see the invitation and consider joining us. If you can not make it in person on June 20th, be on the lookout for our graduation pictures next month.
The end of the school year does not really mean a break for us. We continue to consider how we can further integrate ourselves into the lives of our community. With this goal in mind, we welcome our new team member Cynthia Carrion, Director of Community Development. She will be working with me to deepen our relationships with parents and other stakeholders in our Washington Heights community.
As always we remain committed to a vision for education equity which truly prepares our young people to flourish as responsible future citizens. As you will read about below, School in the Square continues to embed our core values of engagement, education and empowerment within all our programs and activities.

Finally, please save October 17th as we will be inviting everyone to school to see first hand the work we are doing and meet with students and faculty.

With much gratitude for your continued support,
Our First Graduation
On Thursday, 2PM, June 20, 2019 at Columbia University's Miller Theater our 8th graders will be walking across the stage as the first graduating class of School in the Square.

This prideful milestone would not be possible without you. We hope you can join us. Click here to see the full invite .

Earth Day at S2
S2 Science teachers Patrick Morrison and Sara Scheinfeld organized an exciting event with students and their families to celebrate earth day. Teaching our students more about the planet and fostering environmental stewardship was the goal for this unique event.

As Ms. Scheinfeld shared, "It was a fun evening for students and their families to engage in hands-on, exploratory science learning." This was also a night of many first, as students (and their families) were able to experience holding a snake, a worm, or plant a seed. Additional activities included using microscopes and observing shoreline animals in seawater!

S2 is grateful to the City Park Foundation, Sheldrake Environmental Center, teachers, staff and families who shared their time in making our first Earth Day Celebration a success.

"Loved the opportunity to spend time with my daughter, learning, and getting our hands dirty making seed bombs." - Tisha, parent

"Seeing my son excited, this is his thing. It was amazing to dissect owl pellets with him."
- Rocio, parent

"It was very interesting. I learned a lot about worms, the environment and how to take care of plants in a Recycled Terrarium." - Justin, student

English Classes for Parents
At School in the Square, we are a community of learners and our commitment extends to parents and staff as well. For the past year, English teacher Lesley Perez has been leading our English Classes for S2 Parents and Staff. Every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30PM - 6:30PM, this enthusiastic group comes together to improve their English.
"It's a highlight of my week to spend time with our parents. Their dedication to learn and better their lives is very inspirational." - Ms. Perez

"I am grateful to School in the Square for this opportunity to learn and improve my English. It is a safe and welcoming space to try and practice speaking English." - Doris, S2 staff

"Ms. Perez is a great teacher, I have learned a lot. I can see why my daughter likes her 8th Grade English class too!" - Arlenne, parent

Academic Awards
At S2 we believe a culture of care leads to a culture of achievement.
S2 students worked hard during Quarter 3 and received recognition for their efforts. During each grade's waffles breakfast, teachers presented awards for perfect attendance and academic excellence in all core subjects. S2 is proud of all our students and their accomplishments!

Choose Your Trip Day
On May 3, S2 students fanned throughout New York City as part of our annual Choose Your Trip Day. Students selected one of nine trips that included tours of Yankee Stadium, NY Aquarium, Bronx Zoo, Ripley's Believe it or Not Museum, and the Central Park Zoo.

Building on each student's passions and interests, Choose Your Own Trip Day has become an honored tradition at our school. This very special day, allows our students to explore and engage with their city in new ways.
