Interim Vice Chancellor

for Research

We have a lot of exciting news to share since our last message.

UC Davis has sustained its strong research portfolio, exceeding $1 billion in new awards for the second year in a row. This success places our campus in an elite tier of research universities and is a testament to the quality and creativity of our faculty, researchers and staff working across a broad spectrum of disciplines.

More importantly, this funding enables projects that deliver critical scientific and technological advancements to create a more resilient and just society, sustain the environment and our food supply and uncover discoveries to promote human and animal health. In addition, the resulting discoveries often yield new technologies and services through our innovation and entrepreneurship programs. You can read about such examples in our Annual Research Impact Report.

I am also thrilled to share that UC Davis Chancellor Gary S. May has named Simon J. Atkinson to be the next vice chancellor for research, effective November 15. You can read more on that below.

Although I look forward to returning to retirement, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time serving as interim vice chancellor for research. This role provides such a unique opportunity to learn about the plethora of groundbreaking discoveries and the people that make them possible.

Thank you for your continuing efforts to advance the UC Davis research mission to make our world a better place.

UC Davis Chancellor Gary May Names Simon Atkinson as Vice Chancellor for Research

Atkinson currently serves as vice chancellor for research at the University of Kansas, a position he’s held since 2019. He has primary responsibility for research on the Lawrence campus and advises university leadership on universitywide issues including the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. His portfolio includes direct oversight of 10 university-level centers and institutes.

He is internationally recognized for his studies in the prevention and treatment of acute kidney injuries that can be triggered by heart failure, cardiac surgery, toxins and contrast agents used in diagnostic tests. In 2005, he co-founded INphoton, a life sciences company.

His appointment is effective November 15.
