This morning, during my walk in the park, I listened to a sermon by Ian Simkins, pastor of Bridge Church in Tennessee. He addressed the common belief that the phrase "God helps those who help themselves" is found in the Bible—when in fact, it isn't. Instead, he suggested that a more accurate statement might be "God helps those who cannot help themselves," and I find myself agreeing with that perspective. The truth is, none of us can help ourselves in the most important way: we cannot earn our way to eternity or work our way there. Only God could provide that help by sending Jesus.
As I continued to reflect on this, I thought about CAST and how, as part of this community, we strive to help those who need it most. We aim to love through action. I believe this is partly what John meant in Chapter 15 when he said, "Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends." When you show up to serve, you are, in a sense, laying down your life. I continue to be so grateful for your example.
I'm excited for the fall season. CAST Students start meeting next week, and I can't wait to serve alongside our younger friends again. I encourage you to check out the calendar below and consider joining us any Saturday—the students love partnering with adult CAST members.
With gratitude,
Sonja White
Executive Director
