The US is building one of the most powerful lasers in the world that could eventually break the quantum vacuum and produce matter from nothing. ZEUS, the Zettawatt-Equivalent Ultrashort Pulse Laser System, will be built around the existing high-intensity HERCULES laser, located at the University of Michigan's Center for Ultrafast Optical Science, which is currently the most intense repetitive laser in existence. ZEUS will serve as a high-power laser user facility for all US scientists, as well as the wider international research community.
