Or Shalom At Home
It's week 4 of our online photo feature, Or Shalom At Home. Home is where we all are these days, and since we can't see each other in person, we're sharing photos. Each week the newsletter will feature a photo of one member/member family sheltering in place or venturing outside. Eventually we will create an album on the Or Shalom website documenting how our community waited out the pandemic.
John Tibbetts and Barbara Bernstein, with what has sustained us through the lockdown (along with our Jewish faith, of course.)

We invite you to submit a photo, along with any message or caption,  to Lillian. Photos can be funny, poignant, exasperated--however you are feeling. Please identify everyone in the picture (you can use first names only if you like). By sending in a photo, you consent to have the photo, your names, and any message you have written displayed in the newsletter and on the public website.

Happy Hour! You're Invited

Grab your wine, your beer, your mixed cocktail, your sparkling water, your fruit juice...and join us for an hour of informal conversation. It's a chance to catch up and say hi, to share insights and frustrations. Did something funny happen at your house? Are you at the end of your rope, or wondering about loosening restrictions? Talk it out with your Or Shalom friends. No need to RSVP; just show up.

Introducing the Or Shalom Virtual Cooking Show

Many of us have been spending our at-home time cooking and/or watching cooking shows. The next step is obvious: the Or Shalom Virtual Cooking Show, featuring our members and their favorite vegetarian dishes.

We invite Or Shalom cooks to send us a 10-20 minute cooking video demonstrating and explaining a favorite recipe. We will put the best of them on an Or Shalom streaming platform and announce "What's Cookin'" in the Newsletter.

Episode 1:  Rabbi Me'irah's "Bulgarian Yogurt Soup." Find her video demonstration on YouTube, right here.

Do you have a recipe to share? Contact Bryna with your recipe idea (vegetarian, or kosher fish dish). She will email an instruction sheet to guide you in making and submitting the video (thanks to Glenn Mar for technical help!). YouTube stardom awaits!

Brought to you by the producers of the OS/VCS: Bryna Rifkind, Miriam Lewis, Glenn Mar, and Sue Schechter.
OS Coffee Hour with the Rabbi
Every Wednesday at 10:00 am via Zoom
Join Rabbi Katie for an hour of virtual visiting and staying connected. The intention is mostly social, but of course if anyone has some juicy Torah, poetry or music to share, that is most welcome.
Please note that we are suspending our Bet Midrash Wednesday afternoon sessions for the time being in order to devote our single Zoom channel to the Bet Sefer students' meeting at that time.  If you miss the learning, please join Rabbi Katie's Tuesday evening class over the coming weeks.
Join the Zoom meeting here.

Tikkun Leyl Shavuot: Into the Light
Jewish Teachings of Isolation and Reintegration
Thursday, May 28, 7:30 pm via Zoom

What is learned in isolation? What do we take with us as we emerge back into society, and what is forever changed? How does our Jewish tradition prepare us for this unique moment in history?

Join our Southside Jewish Collaborative for an evening of interactive study, joyous singing, and listening to the Ten Commandments as we observe the anniversary of receiving the Torah at Sinai.

Additional Shavuot Opportunity
"Celebrating @ Sinai,
a virtual Shavuot celebration for Reconstructing Judaism"
Starting at 4:30 Pacific time on May 28 and continuing through until Friday morning at 7:30 am.

This all-night Tikkun Leyl Shavuot will include teaching, learning, movement, and musical offerings. View the Facebook live stream for as much or as little as you would like.
Embodied Spiritual Practice: Revelation 2020
with Rabbi Katie and Gail Gurewitz
Sunday, May 31 , 10:00 am via Zoom

Join Rabbi Katie and Gail Gurewitz for our next Embodied Spiritual Practice workshop. It comes right after Shavuot, the holiday celebrating Torah.  What is being revealed in this time and how can we prepare ourselves to receive insight and wisdom?  Explore these questions through yoga, meditation, and movement as we use the structures of Jewish mystical tradition (kabbalah) to guide us.

Please pre-register here and a Zoom link will be provided.

Preparation: Find a space as big and private as possible with access to the internet.  Wear comfortable clothing.  Bring a tallit/scarf, pen and paper/journal and drawing materials, yoga mat, strap/sash, cushions/blocks/chair/ blanket or bath towel and a water bottle. And if any of those are not possible, don't worry!

Wow!  We hope you were able to take part in some (or all!) of our first-ever Koleynu Music Festival.  We had hundreds of people watch live and thousands upon thousands viewing the videos afterward.  If you would like to watch or re-watch the performers, click the links below.  And please consider donating to your favorite performers if you are able.

Bet Sefer Year-End Festivities
Wednesday, May 27, at 4:00 via Zoom

May 27 marks the end of our official Bet Sefer year. We will celebrate with a slideshow of our year together.

We are also planning a few workshops in June. More information to come.

Bet Sefer parents: please respond to the survey about you and your child's experiences this past year. Your honest responses will help us plan for the 2020-21 Bet Sefer, Teen Havurah, and Sing Shalom programs.

From the Social Action Committee:
Opportunities to "Pray With Your Mouse"

Here are this week's opportunities to do good while sheltering in place:
  • Support Reproductive Freedom
Attacks on our reproductive freedom have no place in any bill, let alone a bill means to respond to a global pandemic. Yet anti-choice lawmakers are trying to force restrictions on reproductive freedom into a relief bill. Send a message to your Members of Congress demanding that they reject any provision in COVID-19 bills that would expand abortion coverage restrictions.
  • Protect Florida Farmworkers
Join T'ruah in urging Florida governor Ron DeSantis to protect farmworkers from the COVID-19 by requiring employers to set up field hospitals, provide protective gear, offer free testing, and more. Find the petition here.
  • Become a Builder of Change
Faith in Action is calling on you to stand up and fight back. Pledge to become a Builder of Change to move us toward a world where we all feel we belong. As a Builder of Change, you will receive--from Faith in Action and our member federations--easy-to-use online resources that will let you check in on people in your congregation and your neighborhood, hear how they are doing, and help them make their voices heard from City Hall to Congress. Details and sign-up form here.
Welcome to Sabreen Baquain

Deborah and Dave Frangquist share with us their joy at the birth of a granddaughter, Sabreen Baquain, on May 20. Sabreen is the daughter of Judy Frangquist and Yousef Baquain.  Mazel tov to all!
