What can WE do about Climate Change:
our money and our action!
Thursday, July 12, 7:00pm

What can WE do about Climate Change? -- a panel discussion with Q-and-A.  Speakers from 350 Bay Area, Citizens' Climate Lobby, and socially responsible investment firm North Berkeley Investment will bring us knowledge, ideas, and tools to take action with our investments and with our communities to encourage climate leadership.  Sponsored by the Or Shalom Environmental Action Group. Light refreshments will be served.

38th San Francisco Jewish Film Festival
July 19 - August 5

The program for the 38th San Francisco Jewish Film Festival is now live! Or Shalom will be sponsoring two films in this year's lineup, A Perfect Day for Banana Leaves and Red Cow. You can get discounted tickets to either of these films with the code  ORSHALOM38

A Perfect Day for Banana Leaves
Bananas grown in the north of Israel reach their final
destination in Gaza. They journey south through the Israeli landscape and toward the Palestinians across the wall as we witness from both sides how the merchants trade and ultimately who profits and who loses in this fascinating business operation.

Red Cow
In a settlement in East Jerusalem, 17-year-old Benny is an outsider because of her red hair and the fact that she is the only daughter of a radicalized Orthodox Jewish father whose wife died giving birth to her. Benny is a loner, choosing to indulge in poetry, pot, praying with tefillin and caring for the family's sacred red heifer. When beautiful newcomer Yael arrives in their small community, Benny smolders with a fire that she had not yet discovered.

Social Action Torah Study throughout July
Wednesdays, July 11 - August 1, 1:30pm

In Rabbi Katie's absence, our Social Action Fellow Ezra will be stepping in to lead Torah Study!  She will bring her specific insight and knowledge to guide us in an exploration of Torah as it connects to Social Justice themes. No need to RSVP, just show up ready to study!
Considering God Salon
Wednesday, July 18
nosh 6:30 pm, meeting from 7-9 pm

We will have a writing/sharing workshop on creating our original non-theistic prayers in preparation for the High Holy Day Services. We may also work on our statements of how we embrace our Judaism without needing to believe in God.  You are invited to write/create a non-theistic prayer or two to share at the Salon.

Considering God Salon is limited to Or Shalom members.
Tisha B'Av - Displacement and Genocide
Saturday, July 21, 8:00pm

The 9th of the month of Av (Tisha B'Av) is a fast day which marks the gateway into the High Holy Day season as we recall the destruction of the Temple with mournful melodies and the devastating text of the book of Lamentations.  Join us as we break open our hearts with music, poetry and silence, coming together to face what is broken, and to begin the process of transformation which is both the call of the season and the need of our time.
Please let our Music Director David know if you would like to contribute to the program.  You may bring a poem or a story, a piece of art or a song - of your own creation or ready made.  This year's theme is Displacement and Genocide.

Informational Meeting
Tuesday, August 7 @ 6:30pm

This will be a repeat of our first meeting for those who could not attend.

E xplore the complex layers of Israel and Palestine with your community on a trip that will be spiritual, thought-provoking, and inspirational.

On our first-ever Or Shalom trip to Israel and Palestine, we will:
  • Meet the People - Encounter Israelis and Palestinians from the many diverse communities of Israel and Palestine. Learn about the inspirational cultural and political work that often escapes our headlines across the ocean.
  • Explore the Land - From the contemporary landscape of borders, checkpoints and security fences to the ruins of ancient Israel, to the natural beauty of desert and water, there is no better way to understand or appreciate a place than to be there in person.
  • Learn and Reflect - Our tour will include time and space for learning, spiritual practice, discussion  and  relaxation.

Elul Study Series

Or Shalom Brought a Jewish Presence to
SF Pride!

After a meaningful Pride Shabbat including a discussion of gender identity and pronouns on Friday, members of Or Shalom gathered to raise our stuffed Torah and banner high at the SF Pride Parade! Our presence drew attention from Jews and non-Jews alike, sparking discussions of what it means to be Jewish and LGBT/an ally to the LGBT community. And of course, our Torah on a stick was very popular!
Or Shalom t-shirts are back (and front)!

Did you miss the opportunity to rep Or Shalom at the Women's March? We have them back in stock! With Or Shalom's name and logo on the front and "Justice, Justice, You Shall Pursue" (Deut. 16:20) in English, Hebrew and transliteration, these women's and men's S,M,L and XL T-shirts go for only $15.

Mazel Tov to Rachelle Resnick on the birth
of her new grandson!

Zohar was born on May 17th to Sam and Nadya Sanchez. He joins older brother, Akiva, in their new home in Oakland. His grandparents, Rachelle Resnick and Alejandro Sanchez, now get to spend every day with them!
Or Shalom prays with their feet!

While many Or Shalom members were celebrating a Bar Mitzvah, others were taking to the street in solidarity with those protesting recent immigration issues.  Here are Judith & Michael representing OS.
