Hello Members,

I hope all is well and you all have been shooting your bows. I would like to share a little of what I am going through at the moment and why most of you have not seen me around the range. For those of you who know of my prostate surgery thank you for all the kind words and the overwhelming prayers. I’m recovering at the moment and have been making very slow progress. I’m planning to hold our board meeting this month and see those who are always there to support our range.

Now for you guys who are getting older and need to know more about what prostate health is all about I’m dedicating myself to those who would like to know more about prostate and the problems that come with age. I am making myself available to help those who would like to talk about it and see if I can enlighten you. So please if you have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out to me.

Now for some good news:

We have t-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, zip-up sweatshirts with hoods, and pullover sweatshirts as well. Hats are also for sale with colors to pick from. They will be for sale this week if any of you would like to buy one or more of what we have. I know a lot of you will be heading to B to B and would like to wear our colors so please reach out to me and I will do what it takes to get you some of our gar.

Next piece of news we are set for our 71st annual awards banquet. You all should get your invites to join us on May 18th for a very fun night of great friends, food, and entertainment. We have 110 spots and will sell out as it has in recent years. Once you get your RSVP please mail it back to me. I will get you on our list. We will also accept your RSVPs at our range when we are open on Sundays. Please don’t wait too long as it will be 1st come 1st serve. Let us not forget our local archery shops that help us in so many ways. So please let our sponsors know when you win something at our banquet raffle prices and how much you appreciate it.

Other news: Congratulations to Mark and all those who helped to put on a great shot this past weekend. I will leave all the details to Mark. I'm sure he will be sharing all the details.

I would also like to thank Pete, our V.P. For holding down the fort in my absence, and our board members as well for working to serve our club members also a big thank you Chriss Bowles for getting our trees trimmed up boy they sure needed it done. And they look so much better and hopefully safer.

As always, thank you for taking a moment to read my newsletter! I hope to start seeing more of you guys as I get better.

Club Vice President

By: Pete Whitworth - Club Vice President

Hi Everyone. I am Pete, the Vice President and as such it is my responsibility to run our club invitational shoots. Along with our President Al Wiscovitch, I also deal with the day to day running of the club in general, and specifically we handle any complaints or issues that any of you have. Naturally you are always free to voice any issues at our club meetings held on the second Tuesday of every month at 7:00 PM in the clubhouse, however; Al and I are here to keep things running smooth on a daily basis. So, when problems arise, you should always feel free to contact either of us for immediate help.

I need to bring everyone up to speed on the changes and improvements that have been made for our education program. Those involved in the program have already been updated, and I want to thank Steve Baker for taking the initiative to make sure that people involved in the education program are currently not only aware of the changes, but are also aware of the necessity in making those changes. This has been evolving since the end of last year and was formalized in January of this year, however; apparently even people within the program were not aware of the why’s and reasoning behind the changes and that has been creating some unfounded resentment towards those of us who have worked so hard to accommodate the needs of not just the education program but also the needs of everyone else in the club.

The other side of that coin is that the rest of our membership has also been unaware of our efforts to make sure that everyone’s interests are served, so there has been resentment on that side as well. Naturally Steve Baker’s efforts have helped tremendously on the education side, however; much of the membership is still unaware of what has been evolving over the last few months. So, to hopefully clear up any misunderstandings, here is what has transpired.

As the education program has expanded, their footprint on the club has also expanded. This led to serious congestion at the practice area. To relieve that Al and I began a major drive back around August of last year (possibly earlier, but my memory can only deal with that far back). At that point Al secured another Connex and we made plans to totally rework the existing, yet underused, education area that is next to the broadhead pit. Nothing around here happens overnight, but over time we put in that new Connex, trenched and ran power over to it, built a bench inside along with bow racks to hold all the bows that had been buried deep in the target Connex. Al installed a vent to keep the bows cooler in hot weather. This was all done to make it easier for the education program to operate without having to climb over the Tractor and the Quads just to pull out the equipment that they need every time they run a session.

In January we (Al and I) put out a directive to our Tournament Chairman and our JOAD Coach to let them know that there will be no further education conducted at the practice area to eliminate any chance (or perception) of congestion in that area. I also explained to them that we would be continuing to improve that education area and have plans to move the broadhead pit so that it can be expanded to the left with a couple more targets as well as eliminate having to restrict use of the pit while education is in progress. This is again something that affects both the education program as well as our membership, so we have to keep some balance in how it is handled.

Some issues have arisen as one would expect, such as the need for students to practice at longer distances before going to outside tournaments. This led them to come back into the practice area to facilitate that. Naturally that is a conflict that we can not have, so I had to again explain that they could not be there. At that point they started to use the FITA lane, which is what that lane was intended for from the beginning. I assumed it was handled, however; complaints started rolling in from members that the education program was monopolizing the FITA lane, that they were setting up a Easy-Up, and parking more than two trees deep into that lane.

I went out there and looked at the situation and sorry guys, there is nothing wrong with the way that education is using that FITA lane. We opened up the practice area for everyone else to shoot from 10 to 80 yards without an organized education class in the way, and they have to go somewhere. That FITA lane is the perfect place for them, it is marked off in meters, it is separate from the field range and it was intended to have separate rules when we put it in.

The rules for that FITA range are as follows. It is closed on Sunday during our open to the public hours from 8:30 to 2:00. The rest of the time the education program has priority and has been advised of the following rules. Parking needs to be no closer to the bales than the 70 meter marker (that is three trees deep). They can use an Easy-Up, they can set up spotting scopes, and they can stay there and shoot as long as they like. For safety they need to watch for people using the Field Range who need to cross their lane, and those people shooting the Field Range have the right of way.

The Field Range on the other hand also has separate rules. No parking deeper than two trees for the Field Range. For safety, people shooting the Field Range need to remain aware of that crossing and not just walk out in front of someone shooting the FITA lane. You have the right of way, but you don’t need to be “Dead Right”.

Along the lines of improving the education area, just last week Jim and I went over there and moved that light standard out of the shooting lane and into a position that we think will still work to light up those bales for an occasional Flint Round. We also dug out that stump that was in the way and regraded the area. We moved the bow rack to between the tree line on the east side of the shooting lane.

We also looked the area over and have tentative plans to move a couple of the round tables over closer to that tree line so that bystanders can comfortable watch the education area, and have a plan to move all the trailers, equipment, and the dump truck to form a line extending from the education Connex towards the Cook Shack, with the Dump Truck being closest to the Education Connex so we can take power from there to keep it charged. Like everything else, other things need to be done in preparation for moving the equipment like moving those pipe racks that are currently behind the Club House so we can drive the dump truck around behind there to get it parked over next to that Connex (the reason being that backing it in with the chipper attached is a two man job because the driver can’t see the chipper to back it up).

To sum this up. To our members in the education program, we have built you a separate area and you have the FITA lane as well, plus we are doing everything possible to continue to improve on this. And to the rest of the membership, we have freed up that practice area and are working on moving the broad head pit. Also, if anyone has any constructive ideas, please talk to Al or myself and lets put it into the thought process.

Oh, I need people on Saturday Apr. 20th at 8:00 AM for setup and clean-up before the Big Game shoot on Apr. 21st. I will also need a pick-up crew for Monday Apr. 22nd at 9:00 AM.

That’s all for now folks.
Pete.

Hey there, Oranco Bowmen

I hope this this letter catches you all in good health and spirit. If not, may God Bless and pour His Healing Grace out upon you.

We've all been very busy here at Oranco Bowmen archery range this past few months. My newsletter from last month was omitted due to a lapse in communication, so I'm including it first:

Last month we finished our Annual Club " Champ Shoot " and what a great time our Club Archers had competing in this time honored Field Archery Tournament. A perfect 60°-70° day with intermittent clouds and sunshine.

Our competitors enjoyed fresh fruit, breakfast burritos with hot coffee and cold drinks between registration and the practice butt's before the tournament. Then later indulge in chicken & carnitas tacos or burgers & hotdogs for lunch with chocolate/almond coated vanilla ice cream bar's, the food was excellent and free courtesy of Oranco Bowmen.

The range looks great after drying from all the rain, with lush green grass freshly mowed and trimmed with new Field, Hunter and Animal targets setup on the 2 Valley and front Mt.Range, for this 42 target Field Tournament. Again, all free to Membership and PM's (perspective members) in good standing.

I'd like to thank all the core members and volunteers that made this tournament such a great success in the short time we had to work with due to the rain postponement last wknd and then more rain while working in less than ideal conditions!

All you guys went way above and beyond, l really can't thank you all enough, cookshack volunteer's also! 😉👍

We just finished shooting the 4th annual Bowhunters 3D Championship this past Saturday, What a fantastic fun filled day shooting this tournament, with our biggest turn-out to date for Champ Shoot or Bowhunters 3D Championship in the last 30 years! Again our fingers were crossed hoping we wouldn't be rained-out, as the work party for Fri was, and had to be moved up to Thurs to do 3D setup, and clean-up.

Because this is a Club 3D Hunting Championship we setup the best 30-1 arrow hunting scenario's possible, with multiple 3D Animals including 3 Steel Silhouettes that add 20 points each, or a foam 3D target may be shot if the archer doesn't want to chance breaking an arrow.
Shooting at steel Silhouettes helps the archers to know the importance of shot placement while overcoming the nervousness of drawing down on a live animal, known as ( Target Painic ).

We added a "Last Man Standing" clout to the end of the tournament for a $5 buy-in winner takes all, that turned out to be a crowd pleaser. Nearly 40 archers signed up and paired off in an elimination style shoot-off for a large compound shooters pot, and a smaller trad shooters pot. Everyone had a fun time and it provided great entertainment after the shoot!

All of these tournaments are labor intensive and because we are a hunting and target club we want to provide the closest and most realistic fun hunting experience are members can have, without the time, expenses and hard work of tracking and harvesting multiple game animals, we do this special shoot once a year.

I want to thank all of the hard working members and PM'S for giving their time and support. It's only through their love for the sport of archery and fellow members that they are willing to make these events so successful!

There are a few of our Board and core members I want to thank personally: Range mowing , Jose Lara and Todd Dancer. Target setup, Pete Whitworth, Jim Teel, Rojen Besha and Mike Ocegura, and the rest of the Members and PM'S that help setup and clean-up Thru. the 4th great job guys!

Steve Baker for cookshack coordinating procuring food and volunteers, Malinda Donan for cooking and running cookshack team Members and PM's. Thanks you so much guys food was excellent!

Brad Belvedere for helping run registration, thanks you for being there even after major dental surgery and working through the pain!

Pickup crew, Mike Ocegura, his son 3 buddy's, Members and PM's, and Pete Whitworth for proper 3D storage.

And thanks to anyone I may have forgotten to mention, job well done guys! 🎯

Oranco Bowmen Archery Range

Occupying about 45 acres, Oranco Bowmen Archery Club is a NFAA certified 5-star range. This is the highest certification given by NFAA. We are the only range in Southern California with practice butts from 10-80 yards in 5-yard increments. If you need a place to "dial in" your bow, this is it!

Oranco also has two NFAA roving courses: Our Valley Course is a level 28-target course, consisting of 14 animal and 14 hunter paper targets. For those who desire a bit more of a physical challenge, our Mountain Course is a hilly 28-target course offering 14 Field targets and another set of 14 animal paper targets. The Layout changes occasionally.

Oranco is not responsible for lost or stolen belongings.

Please remember to lock your vehicles when you are not present and always take your equipment home with you. We have received reports about stolen equipment, and want everyone to understand that you alone are responsible for your belongings. We advise you to put your identification information on your belongings and try not to leave anything unattended.

Remember: We are open to the public on Sundays and during shoots. During these events it is much more difficult to track who is on range property, especially if people do not sign in at the office.

Be safe and responsible everyone.

How to Cook Mongolian Venison

I have been making Mongolian wild game dishes for years. Mongolian venison, Mongolian bear, Mongolian rabbit…it’s a family favorite. Most of the recipes I’ve made, however, require a fair amount of time and effort. While they are certainly delicious meals, I don’t always have the time and effort to put into a meal.
