ORANCO BOWMEN ARCHERY CLUB

Club President

By: Al Wiscovitch - Club President

Hi Everyone,

Well, here we are its August and boy it’s been hot I hope you are still cool? I would like to thank everyone who helped with the celebration of life for Bernie Ortiz it was a very nice turnout and yes, it was warm, but we got through it. He was a good friend to all of us, and we are going to miss him, our prayers go out to his family.

I'm sad to report that we lost one of our past presidents he served our club an 1969 his name was Don Williams he was 90 years old and moved and retired to Colorado he was a big time hunter and archer he was very instrumental with a lot of our history I talked to him very often he was very informative as a historian of our club I was able to talk to him a few weeks before his passing I offer our condolences and our prayers to his family. I will miss our talks!

For some of you the hunting season has already started and for some of us that are waiting patiently for our opening day good luck to all of us this year I was able to draw X9A and have been waiting a very long time for this opportunity if any of you have haunted this zone before and have any maps or advice please send me a text or call me or e-mail me this would be very appreciated thank you so much. I will be scouting a few weeks before the opening day and hope to find a few places that might be advantageous and successful. I will be taking my fishing pole as well fishing up there as most of you know can be a lot of fun time to start filling my freezer with some fish and hopefully some venison.

Last month I talked about shirt orders I apologize we are running behind on that we will soon be getting out the order form to all of our club members you'll be able to pre-order any shirts or sweatshirts T-shirts hats that you would like and yes, we are working on a new club jersey. I hope to have that jersey ready soon.

Thank you as always for reading this newsletter.

Ps. I hope to have a very nice story of one of our very own a very very accomplished hunter you'll be surprised when you hear of some of the things he's accomplished stay tuned!

Range Captian

By: Jim Teel - Range Captain

In 2018, I bought a canoe and began making regular trips to Big Bear Lake to fish for trout with a rod and reel. The following year, in 2019 - I began what would become an absolute obsession: bow fishing for carp.

My soon-to-be-wife, Leigh Anne was right along with me shooting carp and eventually joining me into the field archery community as well. Even though I’ve had two other boats since then (a 12’ Jon boat, followed by a 1754 Grizzly Tracker) the canoe has remained in my possession up until just recently.

One of our club’s newest members recently moved to Lake Elsinore and wanted to take up bow fishing. It seemed like the perfect fit for Daniel Durian and his son to begin their own bow fishing journey on that canoe.

Even though the weather and algae conditions have thrown a wrench in everyone’s bow fishing plans lately, seeing that canoe used for the purpose that I customized it for made me very happy. Hopefully conditions will improve for all of us soon so we can all get back to bow fishing.

Pictures are of Leigh Anne and I on Big Bear Lake in July of 2020 and of Daniel Durian and his son on Lake Elsinore in July of 2026.

If you’re interested in seeing videos shot from the canoe, the Jon boat or my current boat, please visit and consider subscribing to my YouTube channel.

Until next time, see you on the range.

Hi Everyone.

I hope you all enjoyed our Summer League shoots. We have a bit of a break before our next Flint league which will start in September, but we also have a really fun night shoot coming up on August 29th. So, charge up your headlamps, flashlights, sight pins and lighted nocks if you got'em and head on down to the range for "Arrows After Dark". The fun will start around 4pm with some challenge games you can try your luck on. Also, hot food will be available from 5pm to 8pm. with snacks and pizza available after that. The shoot is open to the public and will start at or around 8pm. Awards will be given out after the scores are tallied. It will be some late-night fun for the whole family so get your naps in early and bring a friend. Dry Camping is available Friday night.

Members and PM's

Saturday morning August 29th I will need some help setting up the shoot so if you're looking for work party credits, meet at the Connex at 8:30am.

Oranco Bowmen Archery Range

Occupying about 45 acres, Oranco Bowmen Archery Club is a NFAA certified 5-star range. This is the highest certification given by NFAA. We are the only range in Southern California with practice butts from 10-80 yards in 5-yard increments. If you need a place to "dial in" your bow, this is it!

Oranco also has two NFAA roving courses: Our Valley Course is a level 28-target course, consisting of 14 animal and 14 hunter paper targets. For those who desire a bit more of a physical challenge, our Mountain Course is a hilly 28-target course offering 14 Field targets and another set of 14 animal paper targets. The Layout changes occasionally.

Oranco is not responsible for lost or stolen belongings.

Please remember to lock your vehicles when you are not present and always take your equipment home with you. We have received reports about stolen equipment, and want everyone to understand that you alone are responsible for your belongings. We advise you to put your identification information on your belongings and try not to leave anything unattended.

Remember: We are open to the public on Sundays and during shoots. During these events it is much more difficult to track who is on range property, especially if people do not sign in at the office.

Be safe and responsible everyone.
