ORANCO BOWMEN MONTHLY NEWSLETTER - FEBRUARY 2021
ORANCO BOWMEN ARCHERY CLUB
Club President

By: Joe Dotterer - Club President

Since the Covid pandemic, things have been very different at the range and everywhere else. I hope everyone is doing well.

Most members know but some don't so I will give some back ground information on the club and our lease. The property we are on is owned by the US Army Corps of engineers and is part of the Flood Basin of Prado Dam. San Bernardino County lease from the Corps of Engineers and we in turn lease from San Bernardino Parks Dept. as well as the Gun Range, the Golf course and the Dog Training Facility across the street.

As you should know, we are now allowing members to bring 1 guest per visit and that guest can only come 2 times but you can bring a different person each time. We are open to the public now under certain conditions. Limited number of people at a time on the range including members. That means our members might not be able to come in if we are at the maximum number of shooters and we have to have more board members there to supervise everyone.

We are still working on the cook shack and its turning our very nice. We also got all new bale toppers put out on all the roving targets and we rotated or replaced all the roving and practice butt bales.

By the time you are reading this, we will have our new 20 ft Conex building. We are putting it out on the Valley Range next to our 900 round area. This will allow us to remove all the racks and targets and other items out of Chriss's target conex, giving him and Verni more room. This will also make setting up and tear down when we shoot the CBH State Target Championship.

This past year we have been able to borrow a front loader from Xenio Williams allowing us to fluff all the dirt piles on the range to make it a safer place to shoot.

I would like to thank everyone that has come out to help at the work parties in 2020 year. We had some great turnouts and lots of hard workers.

Hopefully we will be able to have some tournaments in 2021 but who knows when.

I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Please stay safe.

Oranco Members,

It’s been too long since our last update, but the Club continues on the path toward pre-COVID normal operations. We’re open to the public on Sundays, and I am looking forward to warmer weather and upcoming tournament events! Can’t wait to see you out there!

Here is a quick summary of Oranco updates from Club meetings November - February:

TOURNAMENTS:
· Oranco Champ Shoot will be held March 20, 2021.The tournament is open to members and 1 guest (must shoot with inviting member). Registration is FREE for members and $10 for guests and includes a lunch ticket. The tournament consists of 14 hunter, 14 field and 14 animal rounds. Awards to be presented at a later date (hopefully at the Club annual banquet).
· CBH State Broadhead will be held Memorial Day weekend near Castaic. Check out the CBH website for details and registration. · Check out the CBH Event Calendar for additional tournament dates and updates on cancellations throughout California.

BEGINNERS ARCHERY CLASS
· Please check out our website or contact Vernie Urbano at archer@vernie.biz or 714-928-4100 for more information and to RSVP.

JUNIOR FIELD ARCHERS
· Held first Sunday of each month at 9am. Participation is free for members and children under 11. Guests are $20. No pre-registration required. Please contact David Bacon at orancobowmen@outlook.com or 909-217-4441 for more information.

LADIES
· If you would like to learn how to shoot tournaments/league, bowhunt, or just want to shoot archery with other women there is an informal lady’s group that meets at the range at 2:30pm on Sundays. Please contact Amanda Duchardt at ob.secretarty@outlook.com if you are interested.

RANGE MAINTENANCE AND WORK PARTIES
· SIGN UP for emails to be notified of work party opportunities.
· Joe is managing several projects around the range. Please reach out to Joe at 951-897-5685 if you need work party credits and have a few hours to help.
· When we reopen to the public, most Board members will need assistants to help with duties and opening the range on Sunday. Work party credits available. Check out the Contact page on the Oranco website and reach out if you are interested in helping.
· San Bernardino County is hosting an outdoor event on June 19 and is seeking booth volunteers. Please contact Joe to volunteer and receive work party credits.

HUNTERS
· The 2020 hunt season is closed. If you turned in game harvest cards to Jose Lara or Bill Leal you may be eligible for awards (hopefully to be presented at an upcoming club banquet).
· 2021 Turkey season opens March 27.
· In January, the California legislature introduced SB 252 to ban bear hunting in the state. Thanks to a fast acting grassroots advocacy effort by hunters and conservationists, the bill was quickly retracted but additional efforts are needed to protect hunting opportunities. Please visit the Legislative pages on the CBH website, sign up for legislative alerts and reach out to your local legislative reps (AmandaDuchardt@gmail.com) for ways you can help!
· Hunter education classes are available online.

BOW FISHERS **NEW**
· CBH Small Game Club is hosting the 25th Annual Tilapia Shoot in Palo Verde, CA on May 1-2, 2021 · and the Annual Carp Shoot at Lake Isabella, CA on June 5-6, 2021. Check out the Small Game Club page on the CBH website for details and registration.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
· As of January 1, the new Sunday shoot fees are as follows: $20 for the first shooter, $10 for additional shooters, max $40. Ages 11 and under are free. The range is open to the public Sundays 8:30AM – 2PM.
· The Oranco Board of Directors was re-elected and will continue leadership of the range in 2021.
· Pope and Young Banquet will be held in Reno NV in June. This event is knows for displaying some of the best animals in the world shot with a bow and unbelievable raffles.
· Vernie is seeking volunteers to help with the Oranco youth program, which has grown from 8 to 24 youth archers in the last year! What an AMAZING accomplishment! We are SO PROUD of our youth archers! Please contact Vernie Urbano at archer@vernie.biz or 714-928-4100 if you are interested in helping. · Old and new carpet bales are for sale. Contact Chriss Bowles at ob.rangecaptain@outlook.com or 951-757-4571.

RULES REMINDERS
· Target Camping is strictly prohibited and may result in immediate termination of membership. The roving range must be shot in number order, 3-4 arrows per target MAXIMUM (depending on the hunter/field/animal target presented). DO NOT EXCEED THE ARROW LIMIT!
· Your membership card MUST be present and visible on your arrow quiver. Failure to display your card (or wrist band if you are a public participant on Sundays) will result in your being asked to leave the range. ANY member can check membership cards.
· NO overhead drawing! When you draw your bow, the tip of your arrow must stay below the brim of your hat/head at ALL times. This is a serious safety issue! If you are pulling too much weight or are tired/fatigued, consider asking for help to adjust your bow or take a break. We have lots of social members out there willing to chat and help if asked. If you see overhead drawing, be your brother’s/sister’s keeper and point it out. ANY member can ask unsafe shooters to leave the range.

Want to be informed or get involved? Our next club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 9, at 7pm. As a reminder, all prospective members need to attend 2 Club Meetings and participate in 2 work parties to become an Oranco member.

Club Meeting Minutes are available in a binder at the Club office or email Ob.Secretary@outlook.com for a copy. The Summary of Board/Member Actions from the last meetings are included below.

Hey Oranco Bowmen

It's been a year since our last tournament the "Champ Shoot" here at Oranco Bowmen archery range. For many of us, perhaps the toughest year of our entire lives. Some of us caught the virus and healed , some of us still healing , some didn't.
Our hearts and prayers go out to those who have lost friends and loved ones.

We're all looking forward to better times.

If you've been waiting for the start of tournament season we're kicking off with the "Champ Shoot"!
This is a marked yardage field archery Club Championship. Free to members, potential members $10 and 1 guest $10 per membership. All participants will receive a free lunch. So come on out to shoot with friends and family and let your spirit of competition fly!

Oranco Bowmen Archery Range

Occupying about 45 acres, Oranco Bowmen Archery Club is a NFAA certified 5-star range. This is the highest certification given by NFAA. We are the only range in Southern California with practice butts from 10-80 yards in 5-yard increments. If you need a place to "dial in" your bow, this is it!

Oranco also has two NFAA roving courses: Our Valley Course is a level 28-target course, consisting of 14 animal and 14 hunter paper targets. For those who desire a bit more of a physical challenge, our Mountain Course is a hilly 28-target course offering 14 Field targets and another set of 14 animal paper targets. The Layout changes occasionally.

Oranco is not responsible for lost or stolen belongings.

Please remember to lock your vehicles when you are not present and always take your equipment home with you. We have received reports about stolen equipment, and want everyone to understand that you alone are responsible for your belongings. We advise you to put your identification information on your belongings and try not to leave anything unattended.

Remember: We are open to the public on Sundays and during shoots. During these events it is much more difficult to track who is on range property, especially if people do not sign in at the office.

Be safe and responsible everyone.
 Announcements

Range Beautification Party: We would greatly appreciate your help and support to the upcoming Work Parties. Keep an eye out for the email blast. All Club Members and their families are invited. Per Joe Dotterer, Club President there will be an “ALL YOU CAN EAT LUNCH” served for ALL of our Volunteers who come out and help.

Your assistance ensures that the Oranco Bowmen Archery Club remains the best in Southern California. There is a reason why people travel from all over California to shoot at our Archery Club. Get involved and help us out.

Cook Shack Workers Needed: Positions are still available for volunteers to help out during the upcoming shoots. Tony Tobinis back and will be taking over Cook Shack Assignments effective immediately. Terry Lopez will no longer be accepting calls for Cook Shack volunteers.

Please contact Tony Tobin in order to reserve your spot at: Cell# (626) 354-2268. Due to poor cell service in his area please contact him via TEXT message to assure he can receive your information. First Come, First Served.

Target Camping: This is NOT Allowed...Period. Your Membership will be terminated for doing this! The Practice Butts are for sighting in, improving your archery skills, and honing your accuracy. The Roving Range is just that, Roving. Shoot 4 arrows, Score them, then move on to the next target.

You have been warned. Don't do it. It is not worth it.

Why Stubborn Gobblers Won’t Come Any Closer

Few things are as frustrating for the spring turkey hunter as a hard-headed, stubborn gobbler hanging up out of range. You can call ’til your blue in the face, but they just won’t come any closer. So, what’s the deal?

Winter Scouting Tips for Fall Whitetail Success

Last fall, after spending most of my time hunting public land in a few different states, I came to the realization that deer hunting is more like elk hunting than I’d previously thought. For starters, let’s say you’re headed to Colorado or Idaho to try your luck on public-land bulls. Without question, you’ll have company in the woods with you. You’ll also only have a productive hunt if you’re around lots of fresh sign. It’s that simple.
