Club President

By: Al Wiscovitch - Club President

Hello Oranco members,

Hope you are all enjoying this very mild winter weather we are having. Few things to cover this month.

Let's start with congratulations to our Oranco members who made the podium at the State 900 Joads and some of our adults. Nice to see that your hard work has paid off. A special mention of Taylor Spoolsta, our local Pro for shooting a perfect score, yes he shot a 900 with 76 X-marks wow great job. New State Record Taylor is a very special gifted shooter as I have watched him from a kid and become a great shooter and person as well.

Our winter league is going well if you haven’t had a chance to shoot one of the matches you still have time to come out and shoot one. Check with Brad and he will be more than happy to share how to get involved.

Ongoing projects and repairs to our range are still on going and if you would like to help out you can always reach out to me or Jim Teel. At the moment we have been working on our cook shack roof as we had a leak and hope we have taken care of it. Just need some rain and hope we got it. Thanks to Mark Houston for giving me a hand.

If you have been to the range since all the winds that hit us you know how much damage the winds have caused. This past weekend we postponed the league shoot so that we could work on the range and cut and chip up broken tree limbs. A big thank you to those that came out and helped clean up the range. We still have a bunch of work that still needs to be done. Our chipper broke down again and Pete was able to get parts and get it fixed. We will be working on the range again this coming Saturday and will need all of you, club members to come out and help set up the State 3-D Unmarked Championship, Tree chipping and other tasks that need to be done. Let me remind you all that volunteering at our club is optional BUT there may come a day that it will become mandatory so please come out and give a hand to keep our range safe and nice for all of us to use. It’s not easy to keep our range moving forward without the help it takes to keep it right so please give yourself some extra time to come out and help out.

Thank you for taking the time to read my newsletter

Club Vice President

By: Pete Whitworth - Club Vice President

Hi Everyone. I am Pete, the Vice President and as such it is my responsibility to run our club invitational shoots. Along with our President Al Wiscovitch, I also deal with the day to day running of the club in general, and specifically we handle any complaints or issues that any of you have. Naturally you are always free to voice any issues at our club meetings held on the second Tuesday of every month at 7:00 PM in the clubhouse, however; Al and I are here to keep things running smooth on a daily basis. So, when problems arise, you should always feel free to contact either of us for immediate help.

Today, Monday November 11th is Veterans Day. As I type that, I am myself taking a short breather to reflect on what that means to all of us. Generations of family, neighbors and strangers (the friends that we had not met yet), who served this country out of respect and a sense of duty to maintain the rights and freedom that we all depend on. Some gave a little, some gave more, some gave it all. America, built by American Veterans.

I’ll get back to that later at a personal level, and I hope all of you do as well. For now it’s back to business.

Just two days ago Saturday, a dedicated group of hard working members spent the better part of the day cleaning up the deadfall from last week’s windy days. The range was a real mess, and together they made a huge dent in the job. Our chipper was out of commission so all of the debris is just piled up in rows for a later work party to run through that chipper. The problem turned out to be a $2.00 woodruff key on the coupling that turns the lower feed roller and we managed to locate one and get the repair done, so at least the chipper is ready for the next assault on the problem. I don’t have a copy of the work party sheet, so I am not going to mention any names for fear of leaving someone out. You guys all worked your butt’s off out there. No but’s about it! Thank you.

We have the State Unmarked 3D coming up this weekend on Sunday the 17th. I just put out a WORK PARTY NOTICE for this Saturday the 16th at 8:30. (We have been moving these work parties back to 8:30 lately, because; it is difficult for many people to make it to the range by 8). I’m looking for at least 8 people, so we can make this tournament a shoot to remember. This is a fundraiser for the CBH LEG Fund (Legislative Defense Fund) that is managed by our own Amanda Duchardt, the CBH LEG Fund Director. So please come on out on Sunday to shoot this and help support your LEG Fund (I say your, because; it helps all of us).

That’s all for now folks.

Pete.

Range Captain

Luckily, ahead of the high winds that hit our club last week, Pete and I brought down all seven of the barn owl nesting boxes for cleanup and to get them set up with fresh nesting material ahead of the winter nesting season. The high winds made a mess of the range shortly thereafter, with branches littering most of the club property. Bill Waltz, Brad Belvedere and I made a significant dent in the cleanup efforts on Thursday (11/7) and then we had a very productive work party on Saturday (11/9). Big thanks to all of you who showed up for that - and with only a couple of days notice! A few people that didn’t know that there was a work party that day - and were planning to spend the morning shooting - put off their practice sessions and jumped in to lend a hand. For those people, especially - I salute you.

A special thanks to Tony Tobin and Danny Naranjo for taking on the task of cleaning up the barn owl nesting boxes. I’ve also got to give a proper nod to a couple of our newest PM’s, Thomas and Nancy. Thanks to Bill Waltz, all seven of the barn owl nesting boxes are now back up and ready to receive another clutch of future gopher-killers.

Unfortunately, the chipper had another issue that prevented us from turning fallen branches into wood chips, so a lot of that work still needs to be done before this weekend. Thanks to Pete Whitworth and Lloyd Wellington, the problem was identified and effectively handled. I will be at the club probably Thursday and Friday this week to get to work on that goal.

If you’ve got some time available on either of those days, text me to coordinate and we’ll knock it out together. Please text me your name and membership status (so I know whether or not I have to meet you at the gate to let you in) and we’ll knock it out together.

In other range news, a handful of target bales have been swapped out from a single spot target position to a four-spot target position and vice-versa, and some bales were retired altogether with new ones replacing them. A total of eleven target bales have been either rotated or replaced this month, and there are a handful more that will receive the same treatment within the next month or so. I’m doing my best to ensure that every target has a competent bale behind it and the paper target crew is doing a great job in keeping fresh targets on all of them. If you see any of those guys out there replacing targets, don’t be shy - give them the atta-boys that they deserve.

There are some jobs coming up that aren’t as physically demanding as chipping work parties and tournament set-ups that will also need to be handled in the coming weeks. Look for an email regarding another target gluing work party and a work party to rejuvenate some of the shooting plugs. You can also text me directly to stay in the loop on what work needs to be done and when you can help with those jobs.

Selfless contribution towards the work that needs to be done is at the heart of what makes Oranco the top-notch club that it is. All work party efforts also count towards your club dues, so it’s a win-win situation that benefits both you and the club. See you on the range.

Hi Members,

Update on the State 900.

All together we had 150 registered archers and 34 no shows and 10 walk-ons. No question…it was hot on the first weekend but we made it through with the help of lots of water and shade.

The scores have been posted on the CBH website at www.cbhsaa.org.

New Target Bails

Last year we started replacing the targets we use for the State Target (900) and after 4 days of heavy shooting, the new target bails held up great. Next year, we will rotate the adult rounds to the youth distances and should be able to get another year out of them before rotating the centers.

Now that we have all these nice new target bails, lets use them. As long as we can get our schedules together and there isn’t something else going on like a league shoot or beginners class we would like to set up the 900 field on the last Saturday of the month for practice. Members only and space available. I will send out an announcement when we have one planned so keep an eye on your email.

JOAD

I was really proud of our JOAD team at the 900…it was Hot but they made it through and did really well and I think we have a couple new state champions in the club.

Right now we have a total of 43 JOAD members and 24 of them participated in the Clubs Tomahawk shoot. Again they did great, it was me that was tired out chaperoning them. Last year we changed how the youth archers compete at outdoor tournaments and it was a simple fix, when the archers finish shooting, the parents move their equipment to the next target while the archers score their arrows so they are moving faster and so far it has worked out well and it gives the parents something to do.

That’s all for now. Some of our youth archers are going to send in newsletter articles soon with their perspectives. Homework first!

Thank you,

David Bacon

Happy Fall Oranco members.

I hope everyone is enjoying the cooler weather.

We have been shooting the Winter- Fall League shoot. We will have had 3 weekends done by the time this goes out to you. It has been a lot of fun seeing returning members and new faces out there shooting.

So, if you have not yet been out to shoot a league shoot, please come out on November 23rd. We will be shooting our Toughman shoot. We will also be doing our Potluck on the last weekend November 30th. So, anyone making it out. Please bring a favorite side dish. I will be cooking Hotdogs and Hamburgers.

I want to thank a couple of people who have been very helpful to me in set up and putting on this league shoot.

Robert, Ken, Pat, Pete, Jim, and Mark H.

I know there have been others, thank you all.

Thanks to Mark Van Patten for all the help with Sign ups each morning.

Special thanks to Jenny Blattner for all her help entering the scores and getting them to David for posting.

Oranco Bowmen Archery Range

Occupying about 45 acres, Oranco Bowmen Archery Club is a NFAA certified 5-star range. This is the highest certification given by NFAA. We are the only range in Southern California with practice butts from 10-80 yards in 5-yard increments. If you need a place to "dial in" your bow, this is it!

Oranco also has two NFAA roving courses: Our Valley Course is a level 28-target course, consisting of 14 animal and 14 hunter paper targets. For those who desire a bit more of a physical challenge, our Mountain Course is a hilly 28-target course offering 14 Field targets and another set of 14 animal paper targets. The Layout changes occasionally.

Oranco is not responsible for lost or stolen belongings.

Please remember to lock your vehicles when you are not present and always take your equipment home with you. We have received reports about stolen equipment, and want everyone to understand that you alone are responsible for your belongings. We advise you to put your identification information on your belongings and try not to leave anything unattended.

Remember: We are open to the public on Sundays and during shoots. During these events it is much more difficult to track who is on range property, especially if people do not sign in at the office.

Be safe and responsible everyone.

Your assistance ensures that the Oranco Bowmen Archery Club remains the best in Southern California. There is a reason why people travel from all over California to shoot at our Archery Club. Get involved and help us out.

Cook Shack Workers Needed: Positions are still available for volunteers to help out during the upcoming shoots.

Please contact Steve Baker in order to reserve your spot at: Cell# (951) 285-1550. First Come, First Served.

You have been warned. Don't do it. It is not worth it.

How to Make Southwest Venison Chili

Chili and hunting season go hand in hand. If fall itself doesn’t spark the chili crave, the often-cold days that accompany late season definitely will. What better way to counter a day in the cold outdoors than a warm bowl of chili!?
