11-13-18 Meeting

Meeting called to order by President Rachel Toomey. 

Total attendance; 21, members-19, other Kiwanis members-1, Bob Kemper (N.C), Guests-1; Speaker Rebecca Hines. We also welcomed Shana Del Castillo, our newest member.  Nice to have Ed Ludden back with us after time spent "up north" for the summer. 

50/50 winner was Paul Weinstein. Anyone can participate in the 50/50 and win the instant winnings however only club members are eligible to take chance to pull the ace of hearts if their ticket is drawn. Today was Paul's lucky day. He pulled the ace of hearts and won the rollover jackpot. 

Happy dollars; Sheriff Lindsey collected dollars for the speaker, Bob has a new recumbent bike, Buffalo Bills, Harris helped play a role for Kim, proud of 16 year old granddaughter, Susan is a 3x grandmother, thanks for the speakers good work. 

Dining books-Todd reported we have closed the search for more restaurants, we are now seeking places that will help sell them for us. 

Fundraising committee-Paul reported flyers for our BUG Chase 5K are going in the upcoming Turkey Trot event.

The Salvation Army-Bell Ringing  Our date this year is November 29th. We'll be ringing at the Publix Store at South Pointe off College Ave. Volunteers will be needed to cover the day; 9:00am-7:00pm. A sign up sheet will be coming around and a minimum of 2 volunteers for each 2 hour shift will be needed. If you have questions just ask Kim.  

Oasis Reading Room- (Stewart Ross). Weekly reading at Orangewood Elementary on Wednesdays (except on designated school holidays) to first and second grade youth. Times are 1:50pm-2:30pm (you have two different youth during this time). Sign up with Stewart 507-304-1624 or No reading next week (the day before Thanksgiving). 
Literacy Buddy-Early Learning Coalition-Enroll  on the application mention you are affiliated with our club.  Your first book and letter is due to your buddy in November. It's not to late to sign up. 

MS Support Group- (Bill Grant), meets 3rd Thursday of the month at St. Hilary Episcopal Church. The holiday party we are assisting with is Dec. 20th. Set up is 2:30pm-4:30pm, event starts 4:30pm. Many hands are needed for this one, please sign up with Bill. 

Breakfast with Santa; most of the sponsors are returning again this year. The date is December 15th. A volunteer sign up sheet will be circulating soon. 

                                            SLP's (Service Leadership Programs)

Aktion Club-(Karen Hurst) at LARC. Meets 2nd Tuesday at 8:30am. Hold on saving plastic bottle caps until further notice.

CKI Club  FGCU.  Looking for a club member to take on advisor role for this club. Can you help? See Rachel or Lindsey.

Key Club- ( Harris Segel) Collegiate High on FSW campus. They are selling bracelets to help a young girl  in another country pursue her educational dream of being a teacher. 

Builder's Club-( Barbara Hartman, Todd Adams, Ada Trapanese) Cypress Lake Middle School. Meets 1st and 3rd Wednesdays at 4:00pm. 

K-Kids-( Kim Berghs) Littleton Elementary at 2:15pm on Wednesdays 1-2 times per month. 
Next meeting is November 28th. They are working on Christmas ornaments for the Goldwing project. They are also doing a Kindness Strip initiative at their school. 
                                              Program: Destiny Diaper Bank

This agency has provided 4 million diapers to those in need in SWFL. They started out distributing diapers and supplies for infants and toddlers, and developmentally delayed individuals. They were one of 10 diaper banks in the country doing such. The focus is now is with the fragile and vulnerable senior population. They are now the only diaper bank in Florida doing such. She shared how expensive it is for caregivers to buy supplies and how at risk elders often cannot afford to buy them. The agency does outreach in 7 sites and has a thrift store that helps fund incontenence supplies.
