INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION

This is the 66th year that the Orcas Island Historical Museums has sponsored this summer celebration of the island's history.
The day's festivities will kick off at 10 a.m. with the pie booth. Pie a la mode is available as an option thanks to the contribution of Island Market. There will be a beer garden (supplied by Island Hoppin' brewery) and a hot dog stand (with equipment supplied by Kiwanis and Lions clubs).
At 1:30 p.m. the Harvey Family will open up their logging show, demonstrating the skills used to fell and dress timber on the islands.

LIONS CLUB 42ND ANNUAL SALMON BBQ
(Saturday, July 1, 1:00 pm - 7:00 pm, Eastsound Fire Station)
Come join us for our Lions Club 42nd Annual Salmon BBQ using our long, steeped in mystery, recipe. Meal includes a baked potato, coleslaw, roll, beverage and good company.
Cost is $18.00 the day of the event for adults. Tickets with a presale discount of $2.00 per ticket which can be purchased at The Trading Company on Prune Alley, Kay's and Cherie Lindholm Real Estate on North Beach Road. Children tickets are $12.00 for children up to 12 years old. Apple Crisp is also available for $5.00 at the event.
All funds raised from the BBQ is returned to the Lions Service Projects.

6TH ANNUAL FUNHOUSE COMMONS 5K RUN
(Tuesday, July 4, 9:00 am @ Eastsound Village Green)
We'll start promptly at 9:00 a.m. at the Eastsound Village Green. The run will include the Crescent Beach Trail, and will finish back at the Green. Zany patriotic wear is encouraged, and all are welcome to run or walk the route at their own pace.
The 5K fee is $35 and includes a stainless steel water bottle while supplies last. Late registration on race day will be available for an additional $5.
At 10:00, kids can run a 1K race, for a $10 entry fee.
All proceeds benefit the Funhouse Commons and their programs for island kids.
4TH OF JULY "INTER-DEPENDENCE DAY" CELEBRATION

Internationally acclaimed sitar artist Pandit Deobrat Mishra returns to Orcas for a concert at the Oddfellows Hall,
accompanied by Prashant Mishra on tabla. This is a rare opportunity to experience the transcendent music of India in an intimate setting. Proceeds support the non-profit DAYA Foundation and the Benares Academy of Indian Classical music.
SPOOKY TALES RETURNS AT ORCAS ISLAND HISTORICAL MUSEUMS

Stories of Orcas ghosts, limekilns, and local folklore will be told this summer at the Pioneer Museum at 8:00 pm and the Crow Valley School Museum at 5:00 pm. Master Storyteller, Antoinette Botsford will again delight audiences this summer. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for those 18 and under and $2 off for Museum Members. Tickets may be purchased online, at either Museum, or at the performance.

BRASS PATRIOTS HOSTED BY ORCAS ISLAND HISTORICAL MUSEUMS

 The Brass Patriots is the 16-member contingency of the 133rd Army Band, CW3 Scott Pierson Commanding, which is a premier military music ensemble consisting of roughly 50 Citizen-Soldier musicians.
They have performed throughout the Great State of Washington for civic events, public schools, universities and military functions. You will hear Olympic fanfares, heroic works, hymns, groove music and instrumental arrangements of popular music from this outstanding ensemble.
MERIDETH KAYE CLARK @ ORCAS CENTER

M
erideth Kaye Clark combines her theatre work with concerts across the US. She performs in many styles, including contemporary musical theatre, classical, Broadway standards, country, bluegrass, and folk. Merideth is a multi-instrumentalist and plays anything with strings, most notably the guitar and viola. Her sophomore album Young Stellar Object garnered critical praise from New York theater reviewers. She recently recorded her version of Joni Mitchell's album BLUE, and is currently traveling around the country performing this iconic collection of all time, played from beginning to end, in the original keys.

PICNIC AND RALLY FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING

In response to the island's continuing need for affordable housing, OPAL Community Land Trust is staging a summer picnic and rally - "Let's Hear It for Affordable Housing!"
A picnic will be served by the Orcas Village Store; cost is $5 per person or $20 per family. Other activities include music by the Turtleback Brass; an Orcas celebrity "Housing Jeopardy" game, featuring well-known residents; keynote speakers; and several booths where islanders can provide input and learn where their action and involvement are needed.
Walking tours of the proposed April's Grove rental neighborhood on North Beach Road will be led by OPAL staff and trustees. S

CELEBRATE RECOVERY SPECIAL PRESENTATION

"Over seven years ago my beloved 66-year-old mother died from kidney failure. She was morbidly obese and struggled with many ailments including Diabetes. The harsh reality is that my mom ate herself to death and I was on the same path" ( Darla Lorbeski)
The Community Church is hosting a special celebration with Darla Lorbeski, Celebrate Recovery State Representative who will be sharing more about what she experienced and what Celebrate Recovery means to her.
In 1991, John Baker from Saddleback Church, started Celebrate Recovery for people needing help with issues that were blocking their happiness, health, and relationships.
Celebrate Recovery has been meeting on Tuesday nights at the Community Church under the direction of Pastor Ryan Carpenter. Everyone is invited. At this special celebration on the 4th of July, you will have a chance to learn more about Celebrate Recovery.
This is a family friendly event. Pizza, BBQ, and drinks will be provided. Childcare will be available. This event is free.

 Orcas Food Co-op is excited to announce that they will be growing the co-op community through the first annual Owner Drive "Join In July". New households that sign up during this month-long event will receive a free gift when they turn in their application.  Maureen Moran moved from Seattle to Orcas Island with her family in 2016. Her husband, Jim, works on the inter-island run for the Washington State Ferries. Her two children, Molly (7) and Theo (8-1/2), participate in many Funhouse programs.
Maureen spent over 12 years working as an executive assistant managing offices at the senior executive level at F5 Networks, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Safeco Insurance, and JPMorgan Chase. She also brings a background in theater, having directed, produced and performed in numerous productions at various Seattle nonprofit theaters.
PELINDABA AND ORCASONG EXPAND LAVENDER PRODUCTION
Pelindaba and Orcasong announced a long-term strategic alliance to significantly expand Lavender production in the San Juan Islands.

PADDLE BOARD YOGA

 Join us at Orcas Adventures for this unique class and have the opportunity to move through a few Sea Salutations and enjoy some time to play and explore your balance. Bring your own board or rent a board from Orcas Adventures and find your way to a blissful experience on Cascade Lake's quiet waters.
Our Paddle Board Yoga class is 1 hour long (check in is at 9:45am) and is taught by Christine Comito. Reservations are strongly recommended. $18 if you bring your own board, $28 with SUP board rental included.

San Juan County, in partnership with Washington Vocational Services presents: Living Well, a 10 week self management course designed specifically for people living in rural communities. This evidence based, peer led, health promotion workshop is based on the philosophy which recognizes that individual choices are essential components for living a full independent life. Participants will set and reach quality-of-life goals by developing a healthy life style. This is a FREE course.

Get your photos from on your iphone, ipad or Mac organized into albums and events. Learn about the different file formats, what they are, what they do and - their advantages and disadvantages. Plus, we will review basic editing on how to crop, brighten, enhance and share your photos. Everyone is welcome. Presented by RockTech Trainers, these interactive, free classes are fun and informative.
ELDERS IN THE GARDEN SERIES
(Tuesdays, starting July 18, 11:00 am - 1:30 pm @ Orcasong Farm))
Orcasong Farm will offer seven weekly hands-on classes to Orcas Elders, 55 and better, to help you understand the benefits of supporting Island farmers and encourage the choice, and use, of locally-grown foods. Each week Maura Lynn, Orcasong's market gardener, will teach about different organic garden produce and participants will harvest from the garden and prepare a fresh and healthy lunch together.
Transportation is available to and from the Senior Center.
There is no fee for this program as it has been funded through the generous support of OICF. Registration IS REQUIRED, and LIMITED to 14.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH at WASHINGTON FEDERAL
Washington Federal's June Artist of the Month is Barb Von Gunten. Join us Monday through Friday from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm to enjoy Barb's mixed media pieces including ornamental nautical knotwork and crochets, paper quilts, etchings, collages, weavings, soft muslin sculpture, and beautiful watercolors. Quilt patterns such as Mollusks' Frolic and Snail's Trail feature in Barb's works, and offer tribute to Amish traditions and gardeners everywhere.

PETER CARLSON TO SHOW NEW PAINTINGS AT THE ORCAS CENTER

Orcas Island artist Peter Carlson is excited to present The Passage of Time Through the Celestial Heavens, a show of new paintings in the foyer at Orcas Center throughout the month of July. Peter has been painting and showing across the States and Europe for nearly two decades and here on the island for the last six years.
The eleven narrative oil paintings that make up the show are alive with the mystery and humility of this extraordinary place.
