A huge thank you to all the students for their excellent performances in Ellensburg this weekend. For all the parents who made the trek to Ellensburg, it’s greatly appreciated that you came and you were rewarded by hearing the amazing performances. And an enormous thank you to Ms. Rowley, whose hard work and dedication to our students at State Solo & Ensemble really showed.
Chamber Choir
Thank you to Chamber Choir for performing at the Norwegian Ladies Chorus of Seattle Spring Concert on April 24. They did a great job in representing Ballard Performing Arts. Everyone in attendance was very complementary of the Chamber Choir. Norwegian baked goods were enjoyed by all.
University Kiwanis Pitzer/Weeks Vocal Scholarship
This is the 44th year that the University Kiwanis Club will offer a voice scholarship in honor of Carl Pitzer and Norman Weeks. Originally they gave the scholarship to only graduating seniors, but they now accept applications from all students currently in high school, including those graduating in June of 2022. The scholarship rules provide that a scholarship of $2,500 may be offered each year to the most deserving vocal student, to use for voice lessons. This year they will also offer $1,000 prizes to the 2nd and 3rd runners-up.
Each applicant must participate in a concert on the afternoon of May 28, 2022. (Please note that day is part of Memorial Day weekend.) Each singer will sing two songs (one classical and one standard or from the musical theatre repertoire) for the audition committee and audience. (An accompanist will be provided.) Applicants must also submit a complete set of papers detailing their background.
All applications must be postmarked by May 10, 2022. See Ms. Rowley for an application if you're interested or click here.

Orchestra Director Ms. Fortune to Take Sabbatical 2022-2023 School Year
Dear Ballard High School Music Families,
I am writing to share the news with you that for the next school year (2022-2023), I will be taking a one-year sabbatical.
This is my 21st year of teaching music in Washington State. In those years, I have enjoyed some of the most life-changing opportunities with thousands of students in the schools where I have taught: Burley Glenwood Elementary School in the South Kitsap School District; Washington Middle School in Seattle’s Central District, and right here at Ballard High School. Over my tenure, I have had the opportunity to teach all grade levels (k-12), Instrumental Music (orchestra and guitar), Choral, and General Music.I feel exceptionally lucky to have had such rich experiences along this more than two-decade timeline to feed my soul and instill me with extremely well-rounded knowledge and skills in music instruction, leadership, and curriculum development/ deployment.
This is my fourth year at BHS (my “senior year”), and I cannot even begin to express to this community the immeasurable growth that has occurred in me as a music educator and human through working with my amazingly dedicated and artistic students and colleagues here at Ballard. This experience here at BHS has made a HUGE impact on me, and the wonderful support and encouragement that I’ve received from students, colleagues, and families here has been unbelievably helpful. Teaching music at BHS has truly opened my eyes to what is possible for young people to achieve in terms of creating, responding, connecting, and performing!
During our period of COVID isolation (and before), I was afforded a lot of think-time. My philosophies of Music Education and my life’s work have begun to shift and grow. My original dreams of building and running innovative music programs in the public schools as an ensemble director have expanded to include the desire to hone my leadership skills and put efforts toward affecting Music Education as a whole.
My interests and involvement in Music Education leadership have garnered me some opportunities to serve on a national level. I am currently very involved in the National Association for Music Education, as the chairperson for the National Council for Orchestral Education, I am a member of the NAfME Professional Development Committee, and I am a curriculum writer for the NAfME/ Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources standards-aligned curriculum initiative.
My goal for this year of sabbatical is to be able to lean in wholeheartedly to these (volunteer) leadership positions with NAfME, and to see what else I can do to serve Music Education on the state and local levels by offering my time and talents to other music educators, by offering my services to regional performing arts education associations and non-profits, by dedicating a good portion of my time to developing curricular materials that are designed to better align my pedagogy to the Artistic Process/ the National Core Standards for Music, and by designing professional development resources and student events geared toward helping me transform my practice.
It is my hope that this year of time dedicated to the above goals will yield a body of work that makes an impact on Music Education and provides me with new ideas and new inspiration.
I live right here in the BHS neighborhood – so you’ll no doubt see me around, out and about! The BHS Performing Arts team is currently searching for a talented, qualified individual to “take the baton” for the 2022-2023 school year! We will keep families updated on this process. All incoming/current students will be auditioned and placed for next year (this is happening now), and there are no changes in how many or what level of orchestras will be offered next year. I’m happy to try and answer any questions you might have – feel free to reach out via email.
I am looking so forward to making the rest of this school year magical and special with our BHS musicians and performing arts students. There is so much cool music in the works to play and perform as this year comes to a close, and I can’t wait!
Thanks again to all performing arts students, performing arts faculty, performing arts families, and the BPA Boosters for the beautiful support and love over these four years!
Go Beavers!
Most Sincerely,
Elizabeth Fortune

GIVE BIG May 3-4
GiveBig is right around the corner and we need your help to raise $6,500. You – parents and community supporters – are what make the music possibly. Literally. With your help, we purchase music, hire coaches, and provide the foundation for our fantastic arts programs. There are two ways to donate – through our website by clicking here, or directly through our GiveBig link.

This is what we're raising money for:
Specialists, Clinicians, and Coaches: Our fantastic directors bring in clinicians and specialists to work closely with the student groups to hone their skills and understand music more deeply. Specialists and coaching make up more than half of the Ballard Performing Arts Booster Club budget.
Scholarships: A goal of our booster club is to make performing arts available to every student who wants to participate. Many students in the program—and students who want to participate in the program—don’t have funds to pay for fees or trips. We want these programs to be an equitable, enriching, and safe place for all kids to express themselves and grow. That is why our scholarships are so valuable to our booster program.
Livestreaming: The plus side of being forced to livestream concerts is that families can enjoy them from anywhere and share with others — and we have an archive of our performances. This livestreaming technology requires additional A/V skills and techniques. It’s a whole new line item in our budget!
Don’t forget about corporate matching!! Most major companies will match your donations. Ask your HR department for information about how to submit for matching.

Thank you Grocery Outlet!
Our dear friends and supporters Norm and Tammy, owners of the Crown Hill Grocery Outlet, shared the sad news that they will be moving on from their store. Our community owes so much to these folks. They have donated hundreds of dollars in food for our Spaghetti Dinner and they have supported other schools in Ballard as well. "We will be here through June so please reach out for anything you might need before we leave," said Norm by email. "We have enjoyed our time here and are especially honored to have been able to help support the students of Ballard."
Please stop by the store to show some support during their final weeks here in Ballard.
