Welcome and Announcements

Prelude: "Hosanna, Loud Hosanna", Michael Burkhardt

Call to Worship:
You are giving the beast of burden and all who are burdened
               a new dignity.
You are giving majesty
               a new face.
You are giving those who long for redemption
               a new song to sing.
With them, with heart and voice,
               we shout: Hosanna!

Hymn 196: "All Glory, Laud, and Honor"
All glory, laud, and honor to thee, Redeemer, King,
to whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring!

Thou art the King of Israel, thou David’s royal Son,
who in the Lord’s name comest, the King and blessed One.

The people of the Hebrews with palms before thee went;
our praise and prayers and anthems before thee we present.

Thou didst accept their praises; accept the prayers we bring,
who in all good delightest, thou good and gracious King!

Prayer of the Day:
God Most High, gracious and glorious,
blessed is the one who comes in your name.
Today Jesus entered the holy city of Jerusalem in triumph
and was proclaimed Messiah and king
by those who spread garments and branches along his way.
Lead us now from these palms on the road to the cross.
May we follow with faithfulness and joy,
shouting hosanna in the highest heaven;
through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession:
God our Redeemer, we confess
that we are people of ashes and dust.
We join the parade and shout hosanna,
then deny our Lord in his hour of need.
We wave the palms and sing praise,
then hand our Savior over to die.
Forgive us, God of grace.
Our lives are in your hand –
deliver us from evil.
Save us by your steadfast love;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Assurance of Forgiveness

Hymn of Praise: "Praise to the Lord"
Praise ye the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him!
All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before him!
Let the amen sound from his people again; gladly for aye we adore him.

Profession of Faith
…with the whole church, let us confess our faith:
I believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried;
he descended into hell;
the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost;
the holy catholic church;
the communion of saints;
the forgiveness of sins;
the resurrection of the body;
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Thanksgiving over the Water
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
(…. minister continues the prayer)

The Baptism
Let us welcome the newly baptized…
with joy and thanksgiving we welcome you into Christ’s Church to share with us in this ministry, for we are all one in Christ.

Prayer for Illumination:
Eternal God,
whose word silences the shouts of the mighty:
quiet within us every voice but your own.
Speak to us through the suffering and death of Jesus Christ
that by the power of your Holy Spirit
we may receive grace to show Christ’s love
in lives given to your service. Amen.

Scripture Reading: Mark 11:1-11
Sermon: The Lord Needs It, Chris Joiner

Prayers of the People:
Lord in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.
The Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.

Offertory Music: From Partita on "All Glory, Laud, and Honor" (Largo), Michael Burkhardt

Doxological Verse 606: "Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow"
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures, here below;
praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayer of Dedication

Closing Hymn 197: "Hosanna, Loud Hosanna"
Hosanna, loud hosanna, the little children sang;
through pillared court and temple the joyful anthem rang.
To Jesus, who had blessed them, close folded to his breast,
the children sang their praises, the simplest and the best.

“Hosanna in the highest!” That ancient song we sing,
for Christ is our Redeemer; the Lord of heaven, our King.
O may we ever praise him with heart and life and voice,
and in his blissful presence eternally rejoice.

Flowering the Easter Cross
We invite you to be part of the Flowering of the Cross, an ancient and meaningful tradition that represents the transition from Good Friday to Easter, from meditation on Jesus' death to joyful celebration of the resurrection.

As you prepare for Easter worship, purchase or pick fresh flowers and greenery from your garden or yard and bring them to church. When you arrive for any of our services, place your flowers on the cross that will be located in the Courtyard and feel free to take a family photo.

Together we will transform a barren cross, a reminder of Jesus' death, into an Easter symbol. Covered with fresh, living flowers, the cross serves not only as an emblem of Jesus' resurrection, but also of the continuing presence of Christ in our lives.
Easter Memorials/ Honoraria
Donations in the amount of $20 are being accepted. If you would like to give an Easter Memorial/Honorarium, please register online or call Sara Chang at 615.794.5114 ext. 203. Checks should be made payable to: First Presbyterian Church (Easter Memorial/Honoraria).
