Call to Worship

Liturgist: We come this day drawn toward the mountain, where heaven touches earth and glory breaks through.

People: We come longing to see, to hear, to be changed.

Liturgist: On the mountain, Jesus is transfigured  — his face shining, his clothes dazzling white.

People: On the mountain, fear and wonder meet, and we glimpse who Jesus truly is.

Liturgist: A voice speaks from the cloud: "This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him."

People: We are listening. We are watching. We are ready to worship.

Liturgist: Come, let us worship the God of dazzling light and deep love.

People: Let us worship God together.

Opening Prayer

Holy and radiant God, you meet us not only in the ordinary, but in moments of holy brilliance — when the veil is lifted and we see your glory more clearly than before. As you revealed your beloved Son on the mountain, reveal him to us now. Still our anxious thoughts. Sharpen our listening hearts. Give us courage to follow Jesus not only into moments of wonder, but also down the mountain into the valleys where the world aches for healing. Transfigure us, O God — by your grace, by your truth, by your love made known in Christ. We pray in his holy name. Amen.

ATTENTION TO THE WORD OF GOD

Scripture Readings: Matthew 17:1-9

1 Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. 2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became bright as light. 3 Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. 4 Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I[a] will set up three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 5 While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, the Beloved;[b] with him I am well pleased; listen to him!” 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. 7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Get up and do not be afraid.” 8 And when they raised their eyes, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone.

9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, “Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.” (NRSV)

Offertory Prayer

God of radiant grace, every good gift we have comes from Your generous hand. As we offer our tithes and gifts today, we do so with gratitude — for moments of clarity, for glimpses of glory, for Your presence that never leaves us unchanged. Receive these offerings, not only as resources for Your work, but as signs of our desire to follow Christ beyond the mountain, into the needs of the world. Use what we give to reflect Your love, to reveal Your justice, and to shine Your light where shadows linger. In Christ’s holy name we pray. Amen.

Closing Hymn

   “Shine, Jesus, Shine”

  TFWS #2173

based on 2 Corinthians 4:6

The Blessing and Sending Forth

Pastor: You have seen the glory of God revealed in Christ. You have heard the voice that says, "Listen to him."

People: We have seen. We have heard. We are changed.

Pastor: Do not stay on the mountain. Go now into the world Jesus loves — into places of need, confusion, and hope.

People: We go, trusting that Christ goes with us.

Pastor: May the light of Christ guide your steps, the love of Christ shape your lives, and the power of the Holy Spirit sustain you.

People: We will listen. We will follow. We will reflect God's glory.

Pastor: Go in peace, to love and serve the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God. Amen.
