Call to Worship

Liturgist: Disciples of Christ, today your Savior calls you to come up the mountain and pray. Will you come?

People: We will go wherever Jesus leads us.

Liturgist: Will you follow when Christ’s glory overwhelms your senses, and you sit astounded at God’s greatness?

People: We will go wherever Jesus leads us.

Liturgist: Will you follow when Jesus won’t let you stay on the mountaintop, insisting that you return to the valley where people are hurting and in need of good news?

People:  We will go wherever Jesus leads us.

Liturgist: Disciples, come! Let us worship God, whose glory shines on the mountaintop and in the eyes of our neighbors.

People: Come, let us worship God, whose glory shimmers all around us, even now! (Resource comes from www.umdiscipleship.org)

Opening Prayer

God of glory and power, pour out your Holy Spirit on us today. Reveal to us your wisdom and guidance. Manifest through us your Spirit of glorious grace and love. And make your loving presence known to all, through the ministries of your church. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving for Transfiguration Sunday

Pastor: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Pastor: Lift up your hearts.

People: We lift them up to the Lord.

Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Pastor: It is right, and a good and joyful thing,

always and everywhere to give thanks to you,

Almighty God, Creator of heaven and earth.

From ancient times, you brought forth light from primordial darkness, created us in your image, called us to be your people, and shone through us with your love. When we wandered in darkness and became lost in grumbling and fear, you led us as a pillar of light and beckoned us home. In the words of prophets and poets, you called us to return to your light, offering us a vision of renewal and promising us a better future. And in the fullness of time, you sent your Son, Christ Jesus, the Light of the World, to redeem us with love and grace, invite us to walk in the light, and shine as light for the world.

And so, with your people on earth

and all the company of heaven,

we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

People:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest!

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest!

Pastor:

Holy are you, and blessed is your Son, Jesus Christ.

He came to reveal your glory,

not only in radiant light,

but also in the way he loved, healed, and served.

Jesus took the bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to disciples, who had witnessed the glory of his transfiguration and who would soon witness his death, saying:

“Take, eat; this is my body, which is given for you.

Do this in remembrance of me.”

After supper, Jesus took the cup, blessed it and gave it to his disciples, saying: “Drink from this, all of you;

this is my blood of the new covenant,

poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

And so, in remembrance of these mighty acts in Jesus Christ,

we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving

as a holy and living sacrifice,

in union with Christ’s offering for us,

as we proclaim the mystery of faith:

People:

Christ has died,

Christ is risen,

Christ will come again.

Pastor:

Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here,

and on these gifts of bread and wine.

Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ,

that we may be for the world the body of Christ,

redeemed by his blood.

By your Spirit, make us one with Christ,

one with each other,

and one in ministry to all the world,

until Christ comes in final glory

and we feast at his heavenly banquet.

Through your Son Jesus Christ,

with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church,

all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God,

now and forever.

People: Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Breaking the Bread & Sharing the Cup

Pastor: Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body,

for we all partake of the one loaf.

The bread which we break is a sharing in the body of Christ.

The cup over which we give thanks is a sharing in the blood of Christ.

(The congregation is invited to receive the elements.)

Prayer After Communion

Eternal God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery in which you have given yourself to us. As we go forth from this table, may we shine with the radiance of Christ’s glory, transformed by his presence, and ready to serve the world in his name.

Amen.

ATTENTION TO THE WORD OF GOD

*Scripture Readings

Luke 9:28-43

28Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. 29And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. 30Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. 31They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. 33Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah” —not knowing what he said. 34While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. 35Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!” 36When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in those days told no one any of the things they had seen.

37On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met him. 38Just then a man from the crowd shouted, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son; he is my only child. 39Suddenly a spirit seizes him, and all at once he shrieks. It convulses him until he foams at the mouth; it mauls him and will scarcely leave him. 40I begged your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.” 41Jesus answered, “You faithless and perverse generation, how much longer must I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.” 42While he was coming, the demon dashed him to the ground in convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.

43And all were astounded at the greatness of God.”  (NRSV)

Liturgist: The word of God for the people of God.

People: Thanks be to God.
