Dear Retailers & CART Followers,
On Thursday, Oct. 16, the Tiburon Town Council gave initial, unanimous approval to an ordinance that would ban the sale of all tobacco and nicotine products within the town, about 15 miles north of San Francisco.
The push originated with local high school students who warned that vaping had become pervasive on campus; Mayor Holli Thier noted that Marin County youth vape at roughly twice the statewide rate.
Tiburon currently has no tobacco retailers, but the measure would still mark a significant policy shift: It faces a second reading and vote in November, and if approved, would take effect in December 2025.
Adoption would place Tiburon alongside Beverly Hills—where cigar lounge sales remain legal—and Manhattan Beach as California cities with comprehensive retail bans.
Nearby communities are watching closely, with Ross slated to consider a similar proposal next month and Belvedere and Corte Madera reportedly exploring their own options.
Tiburon’s population is roughly 9,000.
