The Pause

Offerings to inspire reflection, to break apart a day of obligations or demands, and to help us reconnect with our shared humanity. Use this for a quiet moment and take from these offerings what you want.

Gratitude for Labor Day

While traveling in Reims, France, this summer, my family stumbled upon two monuments. The first was a long-standing pillar that was placed in 1924 to honor civilian nurses who served the troops during World War I. The smaller plaque, which was set at its base, was placed in July 2020 to honor healthcare workers who served faithfully during the initial months of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Colleagues, this was a great honor to me—that the people of Reims see a historical connection to be made and that our work during the pandemic is valued!

When Giving is All We Have

Alberto Rios

One river gives

Its journey to the next.

We give because someone gave to us.

We give because nobody gave to us.

We give because giving has changed us.

We give because giving could have changed us.

We have been better for it,

We have been wounded by it—

Giving has many faces: It is loud and quiet,

Big, though small, diamond in wood-nails.

Its story is old, the plot worn and the pages too,

But we read this book, anyway, over and again:

Giving is, first and every time, hand to hand,

Mine to yours, yours to mine.

You gave me blue and I gave you yellow.

Together we are simple green. You gave me

What you did not have, and I gave you

What I had to give—together, we made

Something greater from the difference.

Support the 19th Annual OHSU

Healthcare Equity Fair

We are excited to invite you to support the 19th Annual OHSU Health Care Equity Fair (HCEF), taking place October 4th, 2026, from 10:00am – 3:00pm at Pioneer Courthouse Square.

HCEF is a completely free, medical student-led health fair serving unhoused and underserved Portlanders. Organized by students and faculty from OHSU and Western University of Health Sciences, the fair brings together community organizations and health professionals to provide essential health care, resources, and support. Last year, HCEF served more than 350 community members.

This year, Oregon ACP is raising funds to help HCEF purchase new canopy tents after many of the tents used at last year's fair were damaged beyond reuse during an unexpected rainstorm. These tents are essential to providing safe, private, and weather-protected spaces where clinicians and community partners can care for participants with dignity.

To contribute, click the link below and you can use the drop down menu to direct your donation to this event.

HCEF is entirely donor-funded and volunteer-run, so 100% of the contributions from Oregon ACP members will directly support the care provided at this year's fair!

Thank you for supporting our students, community partners, and the Portlanders they serve.

Best,

Doug Rice
