Narrative Medicine

Total Recall: Not the Movie, the Moment.

This week, the Oregon ACP Wellness Committee held their first Narrative Medicine Event, in which experienced physicians joined medical students in the spirit of us recalling ourselves to our own humanity.

We took the space to honor who we are as all of us work to support our values –and our whole selves -- within a broken healthcare system. Asked to reflect upon three prompts to inspire our own reflections, the group came together with energy around how a “Collective No” might support values that brought all of us to medicine in the first place.

We are exactly what is needed to fix what is broken and to elevate these values. We are the right people, just as we are, with the collective compassion for suffering that brought us to this calling, even while living our own burdens and struggles. What, in medicine, brings us back to this work, day after day, despite the frustration and struggle? It is our patients who recall us to our mission.

The older participating physicians experienced the medical students as a demonstration for persistent hope. The medical students got a warning; you think it’s hard to join medical practice? Just try leaving . . . . What we learned: we struggle, we love the work.

The Wellness Committee members thank this group for coming together in community and invite others to join us next time.
