Steve: Unbeknownst to us, our brain does an incredible amount of work while we sleep. Our hypothalamus safeguards blood sugar overnight by directing fat breakdown and preventing hypoglycemia during early sleep. This subtle control system may explain abnormal metabolism in prediabetes.
In the first four hours after you go to bed, these brain neurons ensure that you have enough glucose so that you don't become hypoglycemic overnight. To do so, the neurons direct the body to burn fat through a process called lipolysis.
Patients with prediabetes show an increase in lipolysis during the night. Researchers publishing in Molecular Metabolism believe that in these patients, the neurons could be overactive, contributing to higher blood sugar.
Obviously, a diet overloaded with added sugars and ultra-processed foods can lead to this issue. However, eating too close to bedtime can completely throw off this process as well. Instead of properly protecting you from becoming hypoglycemic, your brain is spending its time allocating resources to digestion, which usually takes four hours from when you start eating to when it is full digested.

A 60 year-old male came to see Steve. He presented with fatty liver, myriad gastrointestinal issues, dry eyes, among others. Prior to the visit, when Steve was doing his prep, he noticed the gentleman had the highest ferritin level he'd ever seen (721). High levels of ferritin indicates hemochromatosis, or iron overload. There were other blood markers, especially of the liver, that were wildly out of range. Unfortunately, his doctors did not offer much assistance.
Immediately after their initial visit, Steve put him on a rigorous diet, lifestyle, and supplement plan to follow for two months and then they would reassess the blood markers.
After retesting the blood work, his ferritin level went down almost 500 points into normal range. Moreover, his liver numbers that indicated fatty liver dropped significantly and were almost completely within range. Finally, many of his GI symptoms resolved or were much improved.

Pathways to Family Wellness recently published an article of a newborn with frequent crying spells, excessive gas, arching his back, difficulty feeding, reflux, excessive muscle tone and extremely disrupted sleep. The parents were told that their son would grow out of it. The mom, however felt that something more was going on.
When gas drops, gripe water, reflux medication, upright feeding, cutting out things from the diet, changing sleep routines and using different bottles didn’t help, their healthcare provider suggested chiropractic. Even though the mom had never heard of someone taking their newborn to a chiropractor, she was desperate.
The chiropractor found misalignments in the baby’s upper neck, an elongated head and restrictions in the cranium. As the newborn began receiving gentle Chiropractic care he settled more easily after feedings, his digestion improved, he was less fussy and began to sleep better.
At six months his head was no longer elongated, his muscle tone normalized, and he no longer needed reflux medication. Now he giggles, smiles and is a happy little boy. His mother was grateful that Chiropractic care was a crucial part of her son’s healing journey.
