Miner Road Sinkhole Update

Due to the nature of the recent weather systems, the City has been on task to further stabilize the site but not actually begin the permanent repair.   The sinkhole area is in a precarious position due to the above ground re-routing of the two PG&E gas lines, re-routing of the two Central Sanitary sewer lines, the instability of the two headwalls, the volatility of the creek rising and falling, and the continued soil erosion from under the pavement.

The area surrounding the sinkhole is considered unsafe and is demarked by a perimeter fence to protect individuals from entering the site.   Please be aware that this is an active construction area with a great deal of heavy machinery and changing conditions.   Unauthorized pedestrians and cyclists are prohibited from entering the area.

Due to the vehicular and cycling detour routes for getting around the Miner Road sinkhole area, the City is beginning to receive complaints regarding traffic on Camino Sobrante.  Slow down, drive safely, and please do not go around school buses!
Larry Theis, the City's Director of Public Works and Engineering Services will present an update to the City Council during the Tuesday January 24, 2017 meeting which begins at 7:00 p.m.  In addition to providing an update, Mr. Theis will present a project design for Council consideration.

Where Does It All Go?
Central San Offers Free Tour of Award-Winning
Wastewater Treatment Plant

Wondering where all the water and other stuff goes after draining from sinks, showers, tubs, washing machines and toilets? (Doesn't everyone?)   Here's your chance to see that mystery revealed, and learn how wastewater is transformed into valuable resources like energy and drought-proof recycled water. The Central Contra Costa Sanitary District (Central San) invites you to a behind-the-scenes tour of its award-winning wastewater treatment plant.

The plant treats more than 32 million gallons of wastewater a day, produces 600 million gallons of recycled water each year, and generates more than 80% of its own power needs. It is one of the few treatment plants in the country to have earned the National Association of Clean Water Agencies "Peak Performance Award" 18 years in a row.

Central San is offering a free 90-minute walking tour of its treatment plant at
5019 Imhoff Place
in Martinez on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at 9 a.m.

This tour provides a rare opportunity to see and learn about the people, facilities, and operations of Central San that protect public health and the environment 24 hours a day.

The minimum age for tour participants is 10; those under 18 require an accompanying adult. The tour entails a lot of walking and stairs, and Central San cannot accommodate people with mobility disabilities.  Reservations are required.

For more information or to sign up for the free tour, please go to http://CentralSanPlantTours.eventbrite.com
or contact Kit Ohlman at (925) 229-7329 or

If you are unable to attend on January 25, 2017, the next quarterly tour will be on April 26, 2017. Central San also offers an always-available virtual tour with its "Follow the Flow" video at YouTube.com/CentralSanDist .

Planning Commission Action Updates

The January 24, 2017 meeting of the Planning Commission has been cancelled.

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at 7:00PM
in the Orinda Library Auditorium located at 26 Orinda Way.

Zoning Administer Updates:

96 Camino Encinas: Tree removal permit for removal of twin 15" oak tree in the front yard and Revocable Encroachment Agreement for construction of a deer fence within the Camino Encinas right of way. An Exception Permit is required for a six foot fence where the maximum is four feet within the right of way.
Each year in January, Contra Costa's Homeless Continuum of Care (CoC) conducts a comprehensive point-in-time count of families and individuals experiencing homelessness. The point-in-time count tallies information about people sleeping in emergency shelters and transitional housing as well as people sleeping in cars, in abandoned properties, or in other places not meant for human habitation. It provides a one-day snapshot of homelessness and includes data about families, youth, chronically homeless, veterans, as well as gender, ethnicity, and race.

The Contra Costa Council on Homelessness is looking for volunteers to help conduct surveys for morning and afternoon shifts on Thursday January 26th and Friday January 27th.

Volunteer training sessions will be held in various sites in the week before the count.
Parks and Recreation

Exciting News about the
Choose Your Own Adventure
Summer Camp Guide!

Last year the Parks and Recreation Department produced a separate guide for the revamped Summer Camp program. The stand-alone Summer Camp Guide provided information about City-run and contracted summer camps and included a new and improved summer camp schedule. The Choose Your Own Adventure camp guide allowed parents to view camps for all ages in a week-by-week matrix. Parents were able to easily search by week and then find the appropriate age to choose their child's adventure.

Based on the positive feedback staff received,  the  Choose Your Own Adventure Summer Camp guide was submitted to the California Parks and Recreation Society (CPRS) Annual Awards program in the Marketing and Communications category in the fall of 2016 and recently, the Parks and Recreation Department received notice that the City of Orinda is an Award of Excellence recipient for the  Choose Your Own Adventure  Summer Camp Guide!

The CPRS Awards program recognizes outstanding achievement in the ares of facility design, park planning, marketing and communication, and community improvement and programming through demonstrating the CREAM principals of resourcefulness, execution, accomplishment and alignment with the parks and recreation mission.

This year's Choose Your Own Adventure Summer Camp Guide
is now available click here to view.

Hard copies of the camp guide will be mailed to residents in mid-February.
Those interested in registering children for Summer Camps are encouraged to attend the Annual Summer Camp Fair on Saturday, February 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Orinda Community Center, located at 28 Orinda Way.
Those who attend and register at the fair will receive 10% off the fee.

Winter Spare the Air

The 2016/2017 Winter Spare the Air
season runs from
November 1, 2016 through February 28, 2017

The Winter Spare the Air program notifies residents when particulate matter levels are anticipated to be unhealthy. On these high pollution days, the Air District will issue a Winter Spare the Air Alert which prohibits wood burning throughout the Bay Area.

When a Winter Spare the Air Alert is in effect, it is illegal to burn wood, manufactured fire logs, pellets, or any other solid fuels in your fireplace, woodstove, or outdoor fire pit.
