Building Partnerships

Orion accepts a donation from HomeStreet Bank.

Orion would like to thank HomeStreet Bank for joining with us to make an impact on the lives of people facing barriers to employment. HomeStreet not only supports this work financially, but also by volunteering their time to support financial literacy for our participants. Read more about this below. We appreciate our community partners who are committed to making a difference and we look forward to a long-lasting relationship with HomeStreet Bank.

Thus far in 2023, we have supported over 235 individuals in our array of programs and services. This is 20% more than the same time last year. We are seeing growth and engagement in all our programs and services, and it is exciting!

In our manufacturing, administrative, and custodial training programs, Orion’s trained mentors’ complete weekly reviews for each participant in our program. To date in 2023, our mentors have completed over 840 evaluations! These evaluations provide ongoing feedback on soft and technical skills to our participants and vocational counselors. This valuable input is useful in identifying a person’s strengths and assisting them to develop goals.

From March through May this year, we supported 25 individuals to locate jobs in the community. This means 43 people so far this year have secured good jobs and sustained them for 90 days or more, and we are moving steadily toward our annual goal of 95. The overall average starting wage is $18.33 per hour.

In May, we started a new feedback loop with our Listen4Good project. We will be surveying participants in several areas, assessing results, implementing recommendations, and providing feedback to our current and future participants. This feedback loop allows participants to see the impact their voice has on the programs and services we provide. Previous changes have included increased training for staff, discussion groups for clients, and targeted outreach.

Congratulations to all the participants who found jobs through May!

Greg, Past Orion Participant

Learning, excitement, and shifts in attitude.

A conversation with Greg W.

Greg is a person who lights up the room with enthusiasm. Greg first worked with Orion in 2017. He commented, "I was apprehensive. It was something new. Eventually, I started getting the hang of it and enjoyed it." "A mentor noted that I had a good eye for detail and for focusing on a quality product—I could really do this! In deburring, I had a kind of sensate tangibility—being able to feel proper smoothness."

When asked about leaving Orion to start a new job, Greg remarked, "You want to hang on—go through things and learn more about aerospace manufacturing. It was a bittersweet moment. I gave a presentation and spoke in front of all the people. It was a great moment, and it was sad. I had to say goodbye… [to Orion]." "I was having so much fun sometimes, I was afraid that Tamie [Job Developer] was going to come and say there was a job for me; I had a trepidation that she would point me to something that would mean my time at Orion was ending, and I'd lose all the fun of Orion."

Greg experienced success in other job opportunities, yet he returned to Orion in 2020 for additional support, just in time for the Covid Pandemic. Greg observed that "…the Chinese word for crisis is opportunity." And he found an opportunity with Bartell's, where he was an essential employee, maintaining a safe workplace.

Greg's duties included wiping down surfaces to mitigate COVID spread. "I threw myself into this and made it a game," Greg recalled. "I made it fun and interesting—I focused on the mission. I set goals for myself by certain times, tests, and challenges. I worked through the monotony, understanding that I was doing something important—preventing the disease."

Like Orion, Bartell observed Greg's winning traits. Greg recalls being told that he was "…the hardest working man in show business" and that "[He] had a magical ability to retrieve things that no one else could get."

In 2020, Orion celebrated Greg's accomplishments by naming him Orion's Participant of the Year. Greg recalled, "When they presented me with the award at the warehouse, it was a really big surprise. When everyone came, I was very literally surprised."

When asked to describe Orion, Greg said, "Orion was always a place that I could count on because I had backup support with Tamie and a lot of other people who helped me, placing me in the right position."

Greg added, "[Orion is] productive, dynamic, [and] exciting. There was so much to learn."

Greg also talked about how the winning traits he'd learned at Orion followed him and continued to support him at Bartell's. "Orion prepared me with a sense of punctuality and motivation. Orion gave me a sense of structure, plus, within that structure, there was a certain flexibility as long as I stayed motivated and focused on what I was doing."

Greg's commitment to working hard was recently honored by Bartell's. "I was given Bravo Cards, which are personal commendations. I was able to enter a drawing for a new car. I didn't win the new car. I won a gift card to Grub-Hub and clothing from the [Bartell's] catalog."

Orion was a place of transformation for Greg. He recalls Orion as a "place that is making a difference." He added, "I have talked to people about Orion. I've told them to check it out and let them know if you are interested in improving your job skills, training skills…they are a fantastic program." Greg said that all the things he learned at Orion "followed me to Bartell's" and have led to his success.

Being a mentor is a two way street; you both learn from each other. Mentors guide and empower their participants. We encourage their strengths and help them overcome challenges. As a mentor, I’ve learned to work with all types of people. It is important to value everyone as an individual, listen to them and treat them with respect and understanding. I want all participants that I work with to feel special. If we do our job right as mentors, then participants will take what they learn here and use it in the future. ”

Congressman Adam Smith Tech Fair

TECH JOBS AND INVESTMENTS

Orion was invited to join the first Tech Fair hosted by Congressman Adam Smith's office. There were over 55 attendees, and the winner of the 2022 App challenge was announced. The Congressional App Challenge is a competition aimed at encouraging middle and high school students to learn how to code by creating their own applications. The Manufacturing industry relies heavily on computer programming and is a career path that can be overlooked when considering a tech job. We were honored to participate.

We are excited to announce that the Boeing Employees Community Fund (ECF) Puget Sound Chapter has awarded Orion the funds to purchase a new shop machine. When we found ourselves in possession of an obsolete part marking machine in a critical area of our training platform, we turned to the ECF to help us help people. Orion currently marks up to 100,000 components every month so accurately and quickly marking the various pieces is paramount. We appreciate Boeing's trust in us as a business partner and the ECF for investing in positive outcomes for people seeking new careers. Boeing Inspires!

ORION SEEKS TO REMOVE THE STIGMA OF MENTAL HEALTH

Building a community that is inclusive and responsive requires creative thinking and problem-solving. Late in 2021, we noticed an uptick in severe mental health challenges experienced by participants and staff. We attribute this to the increased stresses caused by the pandemic, so we sought ways to increase our mental health support accordingly. Since then, we have only seen an increase in the need for additional assistance. We know the stigma associated with seeking treatment for mental health and want to do our part to normalize the process.

In April, we sought the assistance of the Federal Way Rotary Club and they came through in a big way! Their support helped us renovate an unused office so that participants and staff may engage in telehealth and mental health support services in privacy, without the extra time and travel burden of accessing offsite appointments. We have since created a "Wellness" room to provide a serene and comfortable area with sound-reducing wall panels, a small couch, a desk, and a computer.

Before

After

In addition, Orion began a project to relocate and expand our internal "sharing pantry," which includes food, clothing, and toiletries. Staff and community members regularly donate work-appropriate and interview clothing so that people entering our program have easy access to proper work attire. First, we installed clothing racks, hangers, and shelving to organize the clothing. Then, we added a storage cabinet to hold foods that can be quickly prepared so that participants can access a snack or meal while at work. The sharing pantry also includes items to be prepared at home if needed. We completed the project by installing soap and shampoo dispensers inside our shower facilities so that people experiencing housing insecurity may maintain the dignity of personal hygiene.

None of this would have been possible without the support of the Federal Way Rotary Club and our extended community partners. If you would like to support the sharing pantry with donations of food or clothing, please email donate@orionworks.org.

NEXT STEPS CLASSES PROVIDE FINANCIAL LITERACY

Preparing for a steady income.

Orion has solicited feedback from participants enrolled in our training programs to identify ways to improve our program. In our "Next Steps" group, we help participants to prepare for what comes next—employment and financial responsibility. In March, HomeStreet Bank provided valuable information about budgeting and banking. This session was well-received and allowed participants to ask questions and gain confidence around money management. HomeStreet Bank will join us quarterly to share additional financial literacy information.

In April and May, the "Next Steps" group participants worked on crafting their own elevator pitch. This confidence-building practice has helped people to recognize their value and strengths, putting into words the experiences that make them valuable employees. June sessions will focus on setting boundaries in the workplace.

We extend a huge thank you to all the community businesses who joined us for our recent Treasure your Health wellness fairs in Auburn and Mukilteo. They made this Orion initiative to improve our health a huge success!
