Officer Abney, a respected and beloved member of the New Orleans community, served with honor and integrity. He ultimately succumbed to injuries sustained in a violent, unprovoked ambush on him and his partner, Officer Duncan. “Officer Abney was not only a steadfast public servant but a beloved son, brother, friend, and colleague,” stated DA Williams. “His life was tragically cut short in a deliberate and calculated act of violence at the hands of Donnell Hassell – a choice that has left a lasting impact on his family, his partner, and our entire city.”
The jury’s decision stands as a powerful testament to the effective partnership between the DA’s Office and the NOPD. DA Williams commended the unwavering commitment of Superintendent Kirkpatrick and Deputy Superintendent Nick Gernon, as well as 8th District Captain Lejon Roberts, whose collaborative efforts were crucial in building a strong case against Hassell.
