Brandi, what is your personal narrative? What key moments in your life led you to where you are?

My name is Brandi Hester. I am now currently serving as an assistant principal at a charter school in Philadelphia. I think my life has been one of divine purpose. I never would’ve thought that I would be in this moment in this space in my life. And I say that because every system that is designed to tell you who you are has never affirmed me. 

I am an orphan. I was a first gen college student. When I think about my specific key moment that led me here I’ll take you back a little bit. 

I am an educator because my 4th grade teacher truly made a difference in who I am by checking on me when my mom died. By really going out of her way to show me that it doesn’t matter what is happening in the now, but rather what can happen in the future. It was really powerful for me to have a person that would be there to show me that education was the key and the way out of poverty. Because I didn’t understand that. 

Working and wanting to be an educator became a passion for me in high school when I joined a program called TSTT, which stands for Today’s Students, Tomorrow’s Teachers. It was like a grow your own program that created experiences for students of color to expose them to education. I knew that if my teacher in 4th grade had such an impact on my life, that I could do that for someone else. That really shaped why I got into education, not only in America, but internationally. 

Once I finished my Bachelors degree and moved to DC, I noticed that many students who were in special education were black and brown students from other countries. I then moved abroad and began to go to those countries where students were being overrepresented in special education in the US. When I had the opportunity to go to other countries - I’ve been to 31 different countries and 17 different school systems - it made me realize that the root of it is the adults. I know that it seems like such a simple thing, but it made me want to come back to America to show students that regardless if you’re black, brown, or considered an immigrant, you deserve a quality education. And that became my life story.

My key moment is happening now. I’m watching all the little pieces of my life be put together. Policy showed me that I could have a voice in a space that someone didn’t even tell me existed. In writing, in literature, in being an educator, it made me realize I want to make sure that children have that experience and I want to create that. 

I never thought I’d get my PhD, but here I am! I’m doing my research on how systems of whiteness can be oppressive to leaders of color, leading to a high turnover rate. Experiencing the things that I’m reading about in other research is nauseating. It makes it where it’s like I have to do this thing, because you recognize the power of your voice. Also your story. We should have the story of oppression in every area of our lives. 

You are navigating so many networks and projects to promote equity and inclusivity. What systems in the United States do you feel are a priority in being reformed? How do you prioritize this within your own work that you do?

I think that working in a space of educational policy made me rethink what my priority was. As a teacher, I used to think that my priority was solely the curriculum and creating an inclusive curriculum, but I’ve really seen the impact that policy has. I think that the reform has to happen with holding states accountable to releasing the data of diversity and inclusion at their schools. That is something that is not always prioritized and publicly shared even though schools collect it. I also feel it’s a priority that we address why educators of color are leaving and what districts are doing to do that. I think I’ve prioritized this in my own work with DACA recipients this year. 

DACA recipients in some states are not allowed to become teachers. What is happening is that they are getting into educational programs, they are going to college for teaching, and then some states tell them they can’t get their license because they’re not an American citizen. This year I’ve had the opportunity to work on that through TeachPlus. 

I’ve also prioritized it in my belief that our lives should be a living, walking movement of who you truly are. Even though I’m doing many things, all of these things are the same. My goal is to make sure that my life experience is not the experience of my nieces, nephews, or other children of color because we are actively advocating for change to ensure that equity is happening in whatever space that looks like. 

Your www.mahoganypenpublishing.com company is designed to highlight BIPOC authors. What goals do you have with this project and what led you to feel a need to create this platform?

I realized that society can sometimes take your identity as a black woman or queer black woman as separate things. They don’t see them as one. Because of that, sometimes I felt like it wasn’t something I could talk about. It wasn’t something that I used to talk about until I formed my company. That is the reason why I formed my company. 

I wanted people to know our stories matter and we have the ability to define our narrative. I feel that I’m truly confident in my voice as a black lesbian. I feel like I’m gaining my voice. I’m using my platform of being confident now as a black queer leader to create a publishing company. 

Did you know there are only 4% of publishing companies that are of color and 1% are black women. I wanted to use my voice to highlight BIPOC voices and stories. 

We’re working on some cool things at www.mahoganypenpublishing.com . We’re working on the first textbook created by educators of color for students of color. 

Imagine if I as a black child was affirmed in schools. My white peers were learning their own history in school and they got to recognize that they came from something amazing. Imagine if I had that same experience. I’m not saying to take one history and erase it, I’m saying for us to have this textbook that will amplify a diverse teaching curriculum. It’s gonna change education. 

We’re finally saying, “we’re gonna reshape this”. We have to. Look at who’s writing all the textbooks. We have to do better. I feel like this is the start to do better. Education needs to change. 

What advice would you give to future Inclusive Inspirational Leaders?

Having a system of mentors and support systems are truly important. I didn’t have that. I had it later in life, but I grew up as an orphan. Not really knowing how to navigate things, I began to recognize that being able to advocate for yourself allows you to gain a support system. 

I say my family is “of the world” because I have met so many people that have been able to 1) share their life’s narrative with me and 2) also connect with my life’s narrative and really help me overcome challenges. You can reach back to people who have helped you along the way. That’s helpful in spaces that aren’t particularly designed for people of color to be successful. 

I have a favorite quote. It’s by Toni Morrison. This has been my life’s mantra and educational philosophy. It says, “I tell my students, "When you get these jobs that you have been so brilliantly trained for, just remember that your real job is that if you are free, you need to free somebody else. If you have some power, then your job is to empower somebody else.””

I think that if we could live and work in that space, it would really allow the next generation to be truly reshaped. It would be selfless education that they would give to children. 

It took 100 years for people to recognize and see that our oppression mattered. I hope it doesn’t take another 100 years to recognize that it's actually hindering our children. Now, Gen Z is a different generation. That’s not happening. Things are going to change.

Student Leaders Speak 2021 Report Finds Shift to Remote Learning Hardest on BIPOC College Students

Diverse students felt they did not have a seat at the table when pandemic related decisions were made and call on college leaders to include them. The report is a joint initiative between Every Learner Everywhere and GlobalMindED with support from The Equity Project LLC


(DENVER, CO – May 6, 2021) — A new report based on data-driven surveys of 25 GlobalMindED Ambassadors representing a larger group of 102 students from 47 colleges in 22 states found that without exception, the shift from on campus learning to remote college instruction has most negatively impacted poverty-affected, first generation, Black, Latinx, and Indigenous students. Their voices are shared in the report, which concludes that college presidents, CEO’s and government leaders cannot solve problems for these students without including them at the table.

Student Leaders Speak 2021: Student Voices Informing Educational Strategies, conducted via surveys, interviews and informal feedback from mentors, illustrates a lack of national and collegiate preparedness to address the near-immediate shift from in-classroom to remote learning. Students reported a lack of access to an engaged faculty and essential technology while underscoring that their greatest support and strength has come from interaction and collaboration within their dedicated student community. Highlights include:

  • Communities represented included BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color), first generation, living with disabilities, white poverty-affected, LGBTQ+, Veteran, Online, and ESL/Immigrant.

  • 100 percent acknowledged two or more barriers such as lack of internet access, lack of focused learning environment, no personal device, health concerns, unemployment, language barriers, learning from their beds/bedrooms and/or managing younger siblings.

  • 100 percent described absent or unavailable campus support systems beyond the instructor, equating the learning experience and cost of same as being grossly out of alignment.

  • 80 percent disapproved of the online learning experience, citing inconsistency in faculty ability to educate using technological tools and practices. In essence, the virtual environment was not mirroring or upholding the most important elements of the in-person environment, as some faculty were not adequately trained in the COVID-caused emotional/social needs of students.

  • 70 percent relied on peer support as compared to more formal support systems. Students were learning and growing by being together – something critical to note during times of both social and physical distancing.

The report calls on college administrators to implement actionable steps to ease the challenging demands of remote learning and smooth the transition from college to professional careers.

  • Colleges should do a better job of providing a platform for the voices of poverty-affected and first generation students to be heard.

  • Faculty needs to gain a better grasp of digital tools, technologies and strategies.

  • Advisors should recruit student coaches and peers to help newer students from diverse communities.

  • Policy makers must improve access to transportation, housing, child care, financing, lower tuition/debt and career opportunities for first generation/diverse students.
