Dalton, GA—Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE) confirms that a significant portion of the red carpet from the 2026 Academy Awards ceremony (aka the Oscars) was successfully recycled through California’s state carpet recycling program. CARE collaborates with local stakeholders and recyclers to ensure that all recyclable components of carpets are sent to a regional recycling facility, which processes the materials into new products.
"This is exactly the kind of outcome that the California Carpet Stewardship Program is designed to deliver," said CARE CEO Bob Peoples, “Despite early media reports, thousands of square yards of carpet material was not sent to landfill and instead will be recycled into new products.”
CARE’s California’s Carpet Stewardship Program supports a network of over 175 public drop-off sites, and helps to cover costs of collection, storage and recycling to maximize the amount of carpet diverted from landfill. The Stewardship Program was established following the passage of California’s carpet recycling law in 2010. As a result of CARE’s efforts, the California’s carpet recycling rate is over 7 times higher than the rest of the U.S.
Event organizers and venue managers can reach out to CARE for guidance on recycling red carpets, staging carpets and other high-volume materials. CARE also encourages the reuse of old carpet and assists contractors of large projects in finding outlets for reuse.
