Oboist Luca de la Florin will present a half-hour preview lecture about the music featured in the November 1 performance of the Utah Symphony. The lecture will tell Osher members things to listen for, either during the Finishing Touches Rehearsal immediately after the lecture, or during one of the regular weekend performances. The Finishing Touches series gives audiences an opportunity to observe behind-the-scenes working rehearsals. Selections from the program will be rehearsed at the discretion of the conductor. After the lecture and before the rehearsal, enjoy complimentary brunch bites in the lobby, courtesy of various generous symphony sponsors and donors.

Each week, Marcie's Movie Club will watch and then discuss a film at Salt Lake Film Society's Broadway Centre Cinemas-SLC's home for independent film. Films will be a variety of recently released big-name, independent, documentary, and international titles. The class fee includes a movie ticket each week and free parking validation. If a class must be missed, class members will be offered complimentary tickets to watch the film on their own at another time. Osher members will connect with one another over independent, first-run cinema, as well as with their fellow global citizens through documentary and international films. As Roger Ebert noted, movies are an empathy machine! Movies will be shown with captions.

Historical novels tell interesting stories about a time and place and the people living there. The authors of these novels must do extensive research so that their writing accurately reflects the history of the period. Using The Women by Kristin Hannah as the launching point, this class will offer a one-hour look at the history of the Vietnam War-both in-country and on the home front-to provide the historical context for the novel. We will then spend an hour discussing the novel as a piece of contemporary literature. Readers and history buffs welcome! Participants should read The Women before class.

The Language and Memory Aging (LaMA) lab led by Dr. Brennan Payne is recruiting participants for their current study. This study will measure electrical brain activity (using electrodes placed on the scalp) and track eye movements while participants listen to speech presented in background noise. Participants also complete a short hearing acuity test. All data will be de-identified and kept confidential. This study takes place on the main Salt Lake City campus at the U. There would be one test session that lasts 3.5-4 hours, on average. If you choose to participate, you will be compensated $20/hour. Parking will be provided at no charge.
