Summer Learning is Firing Up!

The fun has begun! Summer term is in full swing with over 800 enrollments. But it’s not too late to join a cool class with Osher to keep your brain firing throughout the warmer season. You can learn about anything from Julius Caesar to Revolutionary America to Revolutionary Music. You can discover hidden Utah history by visiting adobe houses in Salt Lake City with Laurie Bryant or reexamining our past and current treatment of people with disabilities with Christine Frazier. You can commune with horses or be entertained with stories about wild elephants from the safety of your own home. The learning with Osher is endless…just like summer with the Beach Boys!

Reader's Theater: Shakespeare's Julius Caesar

With Janine Sheldon

Ah, Shakespeare. Always universal, always timeless. How did he do it? We don't know -- it's a mystery. The Tragedy of Julius Caesar is short and straightforward, perfect for unrehearsed reading. First performed at the Globe in 1599, Julius Caesar is uncannily relevant today as Americans reassess the meaning of democracy, of our Republican form of government (originated in Ancient Rome), and of our Constitution, the world's longest surviving charter of government. We will trade parts and everybody, regardless of gender, will have chances to read the leads: Brutus, the noblest Roman of them all and the play's true tragic hero; Mark Antony (Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears!); and the enigmatic Julius himself. No acting experience required!

Utah State Developmental Center: We've Come a Long Way

With Christine Frazier

The Utah State Training School gave Utah the distinction of being the 46th state to build an institution for what were termed feeble-minded citizens. This was the moral hygiene period in United States history and many organizations in Utah pushed for an institution. Speakers and petitions these groups circulated declared that every feeble-minded person deserved a facility that would help them become "part of the most complex civilization that the world has seen," according to the editorial The Care of the Feeble-Minded in the February 1929 edition of the LDS Relief Society magazine. Over the years, the training agenda lost out to social and economic issues. Institutions everywhere became warehouses and, regardless of improvements, they kept people from becoming part of that complex civilization noted in the Relief Society article. This session is a trajectory of time in the treatment of people with disabilities and how the Utah State Developmental Center and people in the community are meeting the needs of everyone.

The Road to Revolution: America, 1763-1776

With Richard Bell

In 1763, colonists across British North America could not have been prouder to be members of the British Empire. Fighting shoulder to shoulder with redcoat soldiers, the colonists had trounced their mutual enemies in the French and Indian War. In towns and cities across America, colonists toasted King George, his ministers, and his military. In New York City, grateful colonists erected a statute to their great king, a testament to the belief that their future lay with him. On July 9, 1776, a crowd of American soldiers and sailors tore down this same statue, and melted down its precious lead into 42,088 musket balls to fire at the king's army. The two sides were now at war--delegates in Philadelphia had finalized the Declaration of Independence just five days earlier--and that war would rage for the next seven years.

Music, Media, and the Counterculture 1950-80

With James Pagliasotti

Examine music, media, and culture at a time of profound social upheaval. The intersection where they met in post-War America was pivotal, the effect they had on each other was unprecedented and altered them in ways that still impact society today. At its core is a classic struggle between art and commerce, innovation and orthodoxy, freedom and control. And it's only rock 'n' roll. We encounter soon-to-be famous musicians, tour (twice) with the Rolling Stones, and witness the birth of the Classic Era of Rock Music. With a mix of lecture, audio-visual, music, and discussion, we study why it's a story worth remembering and retelling through our personal narrative of the time.

The Adobe City of Salt Lake Walking Tour

With Author & Osher Instructor Laurie Bryant

Pioneers came to Utah from the East with few building tools and their own ideas of how houses should look. But there just weren't enough trees to make log cabins or frame homes. Fortunately, some had come from the Southwest, or even Europe, and they had seen adobes. They put the two traditions together and built homes in familiar styles with this new material. This walking tour will be led by Osher Instructor Laurie Bryant, who taught the Osher class Tales of a Mud Brick City this past spring.
