Fall Term Classes and Events Continue! | | |
Fall term is winding down but we still have three new classes to come, two Utah Symphony Finishing Touches Previews with Luca de la Florin and a November session of Marcie’s Movie Club. We also have several exciting new Special Events planned by our dedicated volunteers and recently added to our website. If you have always been interested in joining us as a volunteer, please read below and don’t miss our special Osher Behind the Scenes classes to learn the ins and outs of what makes our beloved program work…hint: it’s our members! We hope you’ll join us for the remaining fall term fun and please save the date for winter term registration on December 2. New winter classes will be announced on our website around Thanksgiving. | |

Oboist Luca de la Florin will present a half-hour preview lecture about the music featured in the November 1 performance of the Utah Symphony. Learn about things to listen for, either during the Finishing Touches Rehearsal immediately after the lecture, or during one of the regular weekend performances. The Finishing Touches series gives audiences an opportunity to observe behind-the-scenes working rehearsals. Selections will be rehearsed at the discretion of the conductor. After the lecture and before the rehearsal, enjoy complimentary brunch bites in the lobby, courtesy of various generous symphony sponsors and donors.

Each week, Marcie's Movie Club will watch and then discuss a film at Salt Lake Film Society's Broadway Centre Cinemas-SLC's home for independent film. Films will be a variety of recently released big-name, independent, documentary, and international titles. The class fee includes a movie ticket each week and free parking validation. If a class must be missed, class members will be offered complimentary tickets to watch the film on their own at another time. Osher members will connect with one another over independent, first-run cinema, as well as with their fellow global citizens through documentary and international films. As Roger Ebert noted, movies are an empathy machine! Movies will be shown with captions.

Ever wondered how the Osher program operates behind the scenes? Do you love Osher and want to learn how to give back to this wonderful program by serving as a volunteer? Come to one of our classes. We would love to have you!
We have a series of FREE upcoming Osher Behind the Scenes classes running in November. Join us to learn how our staff and volunteers team up together to create all things Osher. We are currently seeking volunteers to serve as Osher Ambassadors to help greet and direct people at our annual member luncheon at Little America Hotel on December 6. We also need help planning and hosting our many fun Special Events. And our Curriculum, Classes, and Instructors class will outline duties performed by the esteemed Osher Curriculum Committee.
Our founder, Bernard Osher, intended his Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes to be member-driven and volunteer-led within a community of peers, ages 50 and better. Every single member, instructor, and volunteer brings their wealth of life experiences and knowledge to the classroom, building a very special community of curious adults who value education and class discussions highly. Come learn how it's done, share your ideas, and maybe even think about volunteering your time or teaching a course yourself for your fellow Osher members!

You joined Osher and paid your membership dues for a year of fun. Now what? This single-session free class will welcome new members, provide a "meet and greet" opportunity to socialize a bit with others new to Osher, and show you the ropes of how to get involved. We will cover the material in our Member Handbook, letting you know how you can get the most out of your membership benefits...everything from where to get your U of U student ID card, to where to use it for discounts, to the many campus amenities available to Continuing Education students. Our program becomes stronger with each new member!

Bountiful Davis Art Center Visit
The Bountiful Davis Art Center was created in 1974 and is based in the beautiful city of Bountiful, Utah. Bountiful City and the University of Utah collaborated to establish the Bountiful Davis Art Center. It became a nonprofit organization in 1984. Located on historic Main Street, it offers a beautiful, unique space where guests can enjoy incredible art and make lifetime memories. Bountiful Davis Art Center is a jewel for the art scene in Utah. The galleries are spacious and well-designed. The displays are very professional and showcase the best works of Utah-based artists. They also offer art classes, art festivals, and family art night.

Lyuba Basin, Rare Books Curator and Librarian, invites you to get a glimpse of the art and history of the book. Featured items on display from the Rare Books collection will include 4,000-year-old clay tablets, illuminated manuscripts, early print history specimens, and twenty-first-century artists' books. After a brief lecture, there will be an opportunity to ask questions and enjoy the treasures found in this collection.

Peter Prier & Sons Violins houses a string instrument retail and repair shop, currently owned and operated by Mr. Prier's son, Paul Prier, son-in-law Jon Hatch, and their friend Chris Johnson. Peter Prier (1942-2015) came to the United States from Germany in 1960, first working at Pearce Music Company, which he purchased and renamed Peter Prier Violins in 1965. Mr. Prier started the Violin Making School of America in 1972. Artists who have owned his instruments include Yehudi Menuhin, Joseph Silverstein, and Daniel Heifetz. The Violin Making School of America, now owned by VMSA graduate Sanghoon Lee, is located next door. Come enjoy a tour of the shop and school, meet the craftsmen, and observe how violins are made.

We cook and commune around food regularly. By doing so, we often attach to our preferred favorites and continue to enjoy them for years and years. Some of those favorite indulgences and ingredients are steeped in lengthy tradition, centuries-old recipes, and some are even products of war or the sheer will to survive. We'll explore some of the most fascinating foods and the stories that kept them alive. The best foods aren't just delicious, they're also a part of culture, tradition, and survival. This event will not be the standard Caputo's tasting. Be ready to explore foods you can use for your holiday entertaining.

An entertaining thriller series, Sweepstakes was created to help build awareness about the important issue of elder fraud. The Bernard Osher Foundation also supports a network of Integrative Health Centers hosted within 10 U.S. medical schools and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. We regard these centers as our “Osher cousins” and admire their work throughout these universities, seven of which also host our colleague Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes. The Osher Centers will present their 2nd Annual Virtual Symposium – Healthy People, Healthy Planet, coordinated by the Osher Collaborative, including an impressive roster of presentations by Integrative Health professionals from the centers all across the country. The program address will the reciprocal relationship between personal and planetary wellness and cover four themes:
- Healthy Lifestyle (physical, mental, and spiritual)
- Healthy Relationships (social and ecological)
- Healthy Community (in more than the human world)
- Healthy Future (for people and planet)
