When Hitler and the Nazis rose to power in the 1930s, it became evident to Jews across Europe that their civil and religious rights would soon be in serious peril. About 5,000 Jews ended up in Ecuador as their haven in the storm. Many of them thrived and made lives there, even though they could leave once WWII ended. Even American Jews were unaware of this tiny Jewish community and its many contributions to their adopted county. Doris Rubenstein was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ecuador from 1971–73 and was fascinated to learn about this outpost of Jews.

| | Doris Rubenstein is a Detroit native with B.A. from the University of Michigan and her M.A. from Augsburg University in Minneapolis. She served in the U.S. Peace Corps in Ecuador from 1971-73. She is a long-time reporter for the (Twin Cities) American Jewish World, and was a regular guest columnist for the Minneapolis Star Tribune and the Twin Cities Business Journal, with those articles syndicated across the country. Her many articles on both philanthropy and the arts have appeared in publications nationwide. As a result of her research for the historical novel The Boy with Four Names, Doris has become one of the few Americans who have extensive knowledge of the Ecuadorian Jewish community and its oversized impact and influence on the country that welcomed them during the Holocaust. She has presented numerous programs on the subject of the Jews of Ecuador all over the country including Boise State University, Washington University in St. Louis, University of Texas-Austin, and to her local community in the Twin Cities, including the University of Minnesota.

By David Mastroianni, Natural Growth, LLC
| |
It is never too late to address the health concerns of aging, no matter what your age. We will discuss the differences between chronological vs. biological age, longevity, and the latest scientific research in the areas of nutrition, sleep, movement, and engagement. What are the four pillars of healthy aging, and how do they work to extend one's health span? In what areas of your life do you practice these principles, and where can we find areas for improvement? This presentation will focus on the lifestyle factors that improve vitality and mental fitness, and ward off the common degenerative diseases most prevalent today. This is a non-medical discussion without surgical or drug interventions.

Farewell to Our Volunteer Leader Linda Johnson | |
| | We are sad to report that Linda Johnson, Chair of the Osher Curriculum Committee, passed away on September 24, 2025 from pancreatic cancer. Linda loved Osher and we loved her. She joined Osher in fall 2010, taking over 80 classes right through this past summer of 2024. She loved learning and was an asset to any class she joined, often serving as a classroom assistant to the instructor. In 2018, she volunteered to serve on the Osher Curriculum Committee and was the committee’s Chair over the past year. Always curious, she helped to ignite the passion for learning in others, reaching out to inspire fellow Osher members to enroll in a particular class and recruiting new and exciting instructors to teach for us. Her particular passion was for topics in science, nature, fitness, medicine, and especially bird watching, Great Salt Lake Audubon, and the Tracy Aviary. Her love for these topics lives on in each person and organization she touched through her dedicated and highly effective volunteer work at Osher and beyond. She will be greatly missed.
