College Summer to Success
|
Thanks to a generous grant from the Minneapolis Foundation and the Minneapolis Youth Coordinating Board, 30 rising seniors participated in our intensive (yet fun!) College Summer to Success program in July.
Students toured the campuses of Dougherty Family College, the University of St. Thomas and Augsburg University, identified interests and strengths, researched colleges, crafted college essays, explored how to finance their higher education, learned about the extensive graduate supports our school offers, and participated in a Q&A with a panel of Cristo Rey Jesuit alumni.

Ivet Reyes '17 and current student at St. Olaf College spent her summer interning at the Thrivent Foundation. Reyes previously worked at Thrivent through our Corporate Work Study Program from her sophomore through senior years at Cristo Rey Jesuit. Ivet notes, "one of the best parts of my job has been seeing that transition from doing basic work, and not exactly understanding what the work was for, into actually
developing that work."
Ivet's role at the Thrivent Foundation has included research, analyzing information, reporting her findings and making site visits, which will help the foundation frame their work for the future. "I didn't know much about philanthropy when I started, but it's been an interesting position and I've learned a lot" she says. "I think the work that the Thrivent Foundation is doing is really important, as well as all the organizations they're supporting. I'm interested in learning more about foundations and possibly working with a foundation in the future."

Jason Chavez-Cruz '14, Bryan Chavez-Cruz '15, Josue Chino-Cruz '15, Chanty Armijo-Cruz '17 and family are featured in
the summer issue of St. Scholastica Magazine. Jason's success at the institution inspired five of his relatives—many of whom attended Cristo Rey Jesuit High School—to enroll as well.
They have had a significant impact on campus, where they've lead social justice clubs and served on Student Senate. "The influence that this family has had on St. Scholastica is going to continue beyond the years of them being here," says Chris Davila, director of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
Jason served as student body president during his senior year at CSS and graduated in May. He is currently working for the Minneapolis City Council and his career goal is to bring about social change through public policy.

We are always looking for new Corporate Work Study Program partners!
It’s easy for companies to participate—companies pay Cristo Rey directly for the students’ time, and the school handles all administrative details such as payroll, FICA, FUTA, W-4, I-9, etc. Participating companies get diverse, reliable and motivated talent for high-turnover positions, without the cost of additional benefits.

Your Support Changes Lives
|
"I feel truly blessed that I was able to attend and graduate from Cristo Rey Jesuit High School. At Cristo Rey, I was given opportunities that I wouldn’t have gotten elsewhere, the most notable being the Corporate Work Study Program.
My Corporate Work Study experience taught me how to manage my time, and that helped me manage everything when I got to college. I have worked so hard to get where I am, and I am so proud to able to say I got a degree.
I wouldn’t be here without the people who helped me get here. Cristo Rey is part of my success story, and you’re part of it too!"
